9/20/12 update:

So now it's time to start the search.  We're taking part of the funds & heading out to film meaningful stories throughout the US and Canada.  In the "crowdsourcing" spirit, we're inviting the public to submit ideas of where we should go and what we should film.  We will select 10 submitted story subjects, and hit the road to film them late this fall.

So what stories do YOU think we should tell? Submit ideas of inspiring people/places/programs to www.facebook.com/nationlightproductions  or to merl@nationlightproductions.com.  If selected, you will be contacted to help coordinate and be credited as an Associate Producer.  Here's an article that just ran about our upcoming road-trip:

Let the Search Begin!

Original Pitch:

The Meaning of Life has befuddled us for millenia, but it might be argued that today – with economic meltdowns, global terrorism, ecological disasters, civil unrest - life is more perplexing than ever before.  So much so that there are many who insist that there is no meaning to life at all.  They’ve simply stopped looking and resigned themselves to distraction or existential despair.

It will take a revolution to restore our hope and our confidence in something universal and true.  And this revolution needs to happen now before there is no life left to explore, interpret and sustain.

Movements  have come and gone, but we are today in the midst of a technological revolution that overturns everything and provides unprecedented opportunity for global collaboration and communication.  The sharing of ideas and melding of imaginations will  enable us to solve global problems and answer universal questions that have eluded us from the beginning of time.

Together, we will crowdsource the meaning of life!

WHO WE ARE

We are a group of award-winning filmmakers who believe in the power of the moving image to move the world. We make movies, and now we’re setting out to make a movement!

Our films include:

Café starring Jenniffer Love Hewitt,  “Everything Must Go” starring Will Ferrell, and “A Buddy Story” starring Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss.

We've built up a community of over 50,000 fans (www.facebook.com/nationlightprodcutions) who are passionate about our mission to change the world through positive media.

WHAT WE'RE CREATING - AN INSPIRED NETWORK

Feature films cost millions of dollars, they take years to complete, and they generally provide a limited one-way relationship with the audience.  We’ve learned from our online community that there’s an incredible opportunity to impact people through ongoing short web content that allows us to interact, dialog, and motivate on a day to day basis.

The point of this campaign is not to promote any specific creed or theory, but rather to create a web-network at www.lifemeanswhat.com where a team of artists and leaders will produce and curate amazing short web content that will explore meaning and purpose in life from a diverse array of perspectives.

HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE ALLOCATED

a. High quality transmedia content

90% of the funds will go toward the production of  transmedia content that will include:

  •  Interviews of people who we think have some sense of life’s meaning – whether it’s community leaders, artists, or just average Joe’s with something interesting to offer.
  • Profiles of inspiring folks who are out there changing the world.
  • Explorations of places where we think meaning may be hiding – obvious places and especially more obscure destinations where fewer people have looked.
  • Fictional webisodic programming about characters who are searching and wondering and trying to keep their sanity amidst all of the craziness around them.

b. Donations to amazing non-profits

The remaining 10% of the money will be donated to a variety of charities that you help identify.

These donations will also provide opportunites for additional content as we travel to check out the organizations and highlight the great work they're doing and how it contributes to adding meaning to the lives of those they affect.

Don't just watch the world, Change the world!
