What we are doing
Mass Driver is an 80 minute documentary about giant electromagnetic catapults for space launches. This sounds like a science fiction idea, but there is a lot of science behind it. We want to show you the science because it is epic. Epic because these are incredibly powerful machines, and because mass driver might just be the key to affordable space travel. Affordable, as in thousands of dollars, not like the tens of millions per ticket that exists today. Affordable space travel also means civilization beyond Earth, space colonies and cities on other worlds. Who would not want that?
Who we are
We are Jacob Krogsgaard and Tom Canton. Jacob researched and wrote Mass Driver. He is an atmospheric scientist and project manager. He is also the giant space geek of the team. Tom is the man behind the camera. He is a veteran director of business, training and music videos. We call him, "Mr. Director."
How you can help
If you can afford it, you grab one of the cool perks in the side bar for supporting us with this cool money thing. You get something awesome and we will make Mass Driver for you.
If you can't afford a donation, we understand, we've been there. You can still help us by telling other people about our film. Facebook, Twitter and the real world are all amazing ways to tell people about Mass Driver.
What the money is for
Making a film costs money. Mass Driver is, unfortunately, not an exception. What we need the money for breaks down as follows:
$40,000 - Cast and crew - Host, director/camera operator, and light & sound technician for three to four months. This what we call "Not starving money."
$30,000 - Postproduction - Video and sound editing, color correction, etc. Raw video is boring. This makes it not boring.
$72,000 - Animation - Mass drivers don't exist yet. If we are going to show you how they work we need to draw them. We suck at drawing. This is to pay someone who knows how to draw. They cost this much. We checked.
$5,000 - Archival footage & sound - Copyright has to be paid.
$10,000 - Interviews & travel - To talk to people, we need to get to them and pay them for their time.
$5,000 - Equipment - Lights, cameras, & props. Tom, the director, talks about lights in his sleep. They are probably important.
$6,000 - Miscellenous - Legal, marketing, accounting. Lawyers and accountants exist. They will figure out how to take money from us.
$8,000 - Contingency - When things go wrong (See Murphy's Law), this money fixes it.
$14,000 - Crowdfunding - Indiegogo's fees, perks, bank transfer fees. Crowdfunding is free like puppies.
