Making a Difference for Matt
The makers of this campaign represent the cast of the National Tour of Beauty and the Beast. On September 28th, 2012 a dear member of our cast, Matthew Farcher “Gaston”, was rushed to the hospital in Houston, TX. He had jaundice and was suffering from kidney failure. He was placed in the ICU while doctors administered a series of tests. Finally, Matt was diagnosed with atypical HUS (aHUS). AHUS is an ultra-rare, life-threatening, genetic blood disease that can progressively damage vital organs, leading to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and death. Until a year ago, there was no treatment. Unable to eat, move, or even have enough energy to speak, Matt proceeded with dialysis treatments for his kidneys and was placed on a medication called Soliris. This drug was only released a year ago and is used as a therapy for this chronic disease. Because of its rarity, this drug costs $50,000/month and over $500,000/year. Matthew will have to be on this drug for the rest of his life to keep his disease at bay. Matthew is fighting for his life and it is our sincerest hope that you will donate and help us to fight with him.
Throughout this entire ordeal, the cast of Beauty and the Beast has continued to fight along side him, trying to raise Matt’s spirits, encourage, and support him. As a way of doing our part, we have launched this website to try and raise money to go towards medical bills, drug bills, student loans, and the cost of living for his family, who have put their lives and careers on hold to be with him.
How It Started:
When Matt was first diagnosed with aHUS, Matt's mother asked that the members of the cast start doing Random Acts of Kindness in Matt's name. We were inspired by her idea to spread love and positive energy to others, and we decided it was time to give back to her family. We are continuing our R.A.K. campaign and have created this website as a way for people to give back to Matt and his family! In Barbara’s words, “Let’s show God that with Matthew, so much good is happening!” This family is perserverant, positive, humble, giving, compassionate, altruistic, and ever deserving of any and all help.
What We Hope For:
We have several hopes in this campaign:
- We hope to raise $25,000 and MORE by February 14th to help Matt and his family in this time of great financial need.
- We hope to spread Matt's story to inspire hope, love, and spread positivty.
- We hope that this campaign goes global. We want to reach out to theatre communities, families, friends, and supporters of Matt's cause around the globe.
PLEASE join us to spread the word about MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR MATT!
