MyFreshLocal.com wants to help bring down the costs of the healthiest freshest food so more people can afford it and it's easier to find and buy.
We will help make connections between consumers…and local farms, and farmers’ markets, and restaurants, and artisan bakers, and local recipes, and gardeners, and organic cookbooks, and soupmakers, and food co-ops, and CSAs, and so much more.
Our current food system uses a ton of toxic chemicals, antibiotics, genetically engineered crops and fossil fuels. This way of growing food and distributing it is undermining public health, destroying the environment and increasing the costs of food for families.
When you spend one dollar at a big supermarket for food that’s grown far away, 80 cents of that dollar leaves your area. That money goes to industrial agriculture, to corporate executives and to oil companies for transportation fuel. The farmer who grew the food might keep 10 to 15 cents of the dollar.
If your dinner has eight ingredients from eight different areas, that food may have traveled thousands of miles, burning oil moving from where it was grown to where you eat it.
But when you spend one dollar at a farmers’ market or a locally-sourced restaurant, the money stays in your community.
Local food connects us, it builds local economies and it improves our health. But it is currently too expensive and inconvenient, because large food companies control the food system driving small businesses out.
But with your help we are going to help change that!!!
What We Need & What You Get
We need to rebuild the site with new technology that allows us to do a lot more stuff automatically instead of trying to manage it manually with 1 unpaid staff.
We need better tools so we can focus on building the audience and letting the community grow organically!
We love the local movement! - we work really hard on the site and we give back to the sustainable food economy through advertising for farmers markets and by creating marketing resources to help food producers find buyers. Access to the site is free.
All the money we receive from our fundraising will pay for the upgrades to the site. We need to expand the database to include different types of producers like artisans and local grocers, we need to add tools for users to get the information they want easily and for us to grow the audience.
So by helping us build MyFreshLocal, you help build successful local food economies, in your area and around the country. As we are successful, the market for organic food grows and the prices for all of us come down.
Other Ways You Can Help
Please help us live our dream of building a local food web for everyone. Even if it is just a dollar that you can give we promise we will make the most of it to build this community.
And if you can't give a dollar but you want to help please TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS and share a link to our project!
And even if you don't invest in this project, you can make a difference by choosing local food. Use the food finder on MyFreshLocal to find farmers' markets and locally-sourced restaurants near you. Every time you choose local food, we all get one small step closer to a better food system.
