MADE FROM SCRATCH: A Film by David-Matthew Barnes
Made From Scratch is an upcoming indie film for and about women, written and directed by David-Matthew Barnes, and produced by the Pinwheel Entertainment Group and Hoop Earrings Entertainment.
When the lives of four women merge, each experiences a life-changing moment of truth. Longing for her former wild days as a party-hopping powerful executive, Claudia Veramonte (Heather Brant) secretly strategizes her escape from her dull life as a Southern housewife. Refusing to rely on welfare, Tameka Walker (LaKisha Long) struggles with working two jobs, attending night school, and raising her nine-year-old-son. When summoned home by her estranged mother, Victoria Alvarado (Lisann Valentin) realizes what's missing in her life is love: a realization prompted by the sudden admission by a female colleague that Victoria is the not-so-secret object of her desires. After Sahara Mobley (Mallorie Halsall) accepts a proposal from a man she's only known for three months in order to escape her overly dependent mother, Sahara quickly realizes her marriage is a mistake. Made from Scratch is a film every woman can identify with: it's about the importance of sisterhood and the strength of friendship that you sometimes need just to survive.
CLAUDIA VERAMONTE (Heather Brant) is a suburban wife and step-mother living in rural Georgia. Her routine and predictable world exists of supporting her ambitious lawyer husband, ERNESTO VERAMONTE, and providing guidance to Ernesto’s two adult children: the always-in-the-middle-of-a-crisis SONJA (Zoe Myers) and the arrogant and misogynistic WALTER (Ernesto S. Bustos), who has damaged the self-esteem of his wife JUSTINE (Alison Kendrick).
During the five years of her marriage, Claudia has struggled with her discontentment, secretly harboring a dream of disappearing. Resenting the expectations placed on her, Claudia fights to maintain her composure and façade, while her rage continues to simmer. Nostalgic for her single, wild days as an on-the-rise executive, Claudia finds herself contemplating affairs with an intellectual pool cleaner, TITO BENAVIDES (Danny Williams), and her step-daughter’s blue collar boyfriend, AUSTIN MCMURRAY (Logan McCoy). Determined to leave her life behind for unknown adventures in Italy, Claudia begins strategizing her escape.
TAMEKA WALKER (LaKisha Long) is a single woman who has been raising her nine-year-old son since she was sixteen. Refusing to rely on welfare, Tameka struggles each day to work two jobs, be a mother to GRADY (Lilton Moore), attend night college classes, and make ends meet. Broke, but never defeated, Tameka feels overwhelmed by her daunting responsibilities but finds comfort and support in her aunt, RUTH (Joyce White). Tameka’s life changes when she confesses her feelings to MARY BILD (Tara Henry), an uptight stranger she meets in a laundry mat.
VICTORIA ALVARADO (Lisann Valentin) is a successful advertising executive, trying to find reason and purpose in her demanding professional life. When she's summoned home by her estranged mother, CONSTANCE, Victoria suddenly realizes what’s missing in her life is love. This is prompted by a confession from her female colleague DANIELLE ZIMMER (Kasey Williams) that she’s falling in love with Victoria. At home, Victoria is forced to confront her mother over issues stemming from her tumultuous childhood and the sudden, unexplainable death of her father. When her younger, emotionally-damaged brother, MARTIN, confesses he’s struggling with his own sexuality, and her childhood friend PAULETTE HIBBITTS (Margaret Champagne) expresses disdain for her husband, Victoria begins to move towards her own personal liberation by leaving heartache behind.
SAHARA MOBLEY (Mallorie Halsall) is a new bride. Accepting a proposal from a man she’s only known for three months in order to get away from BEVERLY (Lisa Allender), her overly dependent and delusional mother, Sahara quickly realizes her marriage to TRAVIS (Wesley Arnold) is a huge mistake. Desperate to regain her independence and identity, Sahara struggles with the decision to leave her new husband and embark on life alone. Encouraged by her childhood friend APRIL CORDAY (Jessica Alexandra Green) and scrutinized by her uppity sister-in-law KRISTY (Kimberly Faye Greenberg), Sahara finds the determination she needs to move forward with her life after receiving life-changing advice from her husband's boss HECTOR CAMARILLO (Eduardo Ambriz DeColosio)
The lives of these women are mirrored by four other women who are years older, but remarkably similar: the tough-as-nails PRISCILLA JENSEN (Trish DeBaun), the true matriarch OLIVIA PREWITT (Coral McGhee), the life of the party BETTY SONORA (Deborah Childs), and the outspoken and always-opinionated GINNY FULLERTON (Debi Kimsey).
