What is the LumiFold?
It is probably the smallest (measuring just 250 x 120 x 30mm when folded) that you can really travel with, and you still have a building area of 90 x 90 x 90mm.
This printer is the best choice as your first 3d printer! It’s not expensive, and it one of most easy to use printer on the market.
Note: the electronic board on the side was still the prototype stage, the final version is thinner and has a protective enclosure
How it works
In the current stage, a projector is used to project, layer by layer, thin slices of a 3d object on a moving platform inside a vat containing a light-curing resin.
The 3d object is created inside the vat and is then extracted.
An overhead unit, with a laser scanning mechanism, is under design and wil remove the necessity of having a projector.
The story of the LumiFold
It was first designed when a customer asked for a small, portable 3D printer that he wanted ot use for printing dentals molds. He wanted the printer to be cheap and easy to use too. We started developing the LumiFold, and after some months of designing, building prototypes, going back to design again we came up with the current design of the LumiFold. And it proved to be so good, we decided to launch a crowfounding camping to provide everyone interested a cheap, portable and easy to use 3d printer!
We received many questions about the portability of a system that still needs an external projector.
We already had a solution! This accessory was scheduled to launch after the initial campaign, together with the scanner unit. But since we received so many interest on this feature, we are announcing it now:
The Overhead Unit
A laser scanning unit that, unlike other similar setup on other 3D printers, uses steppers and mirrors to quickly scan the area with an UV curing laser.
Price and availability
The overhead unit is still under testing right now. It will attach to every LumiFold you have already bought, and the price will be half the cost of a good projector. It will be available Q1 2014.
We are adding a new perk: "The overhead supporter". You will be able to contribute to the development of the Overhead Unit, and will be one of the first to get it when it will go into production, and you will also get a personal coupon to get 25% off the full price of the Overhead Unit.

Special features: integrated UV sensor
You can use almost every projector with this light curing 3D printer. With many other DLP-based printers on the market, however, you have to do many test with before you can find the exact layer time, since every projector emits a different amount of UV light, that is what cures the resin.
With LumiFold, an integrated UV sensor measures the exact UV light level of your projector and automatically adjusts the layer time. Less time experimenting means less time wasting you precious light–curing resin, and this is isn’t bad, isn’t it?
Special features: flexibility and low-cost design oriented
The LumiFold also has interchangeable building platforms with an engraved grid, so you can also automatically adjust the projection for an accurate and correct size of your 3d printed parts.
Unlike other DLP printers, the LumiFold places the projector over the printer: this lets you use almost every container as resin basin, you don’t need expensive UV-transparent glass or Plexiglas, and you don’t have to apply many coats of anti sticking coating to avoid the container become unusable after a few prints.
For the first tests, we even use small plastic coffee cups! And this was perfect for building small parts and using small amounts of resin, and also keeps the printer costs down.
What you'll also love: every part of the Lumifold has been carefully designed, tested and re-designed until it worked as we initially thought: from the magnetic closure system, to the UV sensor for calibrating the printer to your projector.
What you will get in the box...
An open source program for slicing and printing has been developed by us and is provided with the printer.
It is Pc compatible, we will also release a Mac version. In the first quarter of 2014, we will expand the compatibility to iPhone and iPad too.

This printer is also the first one that has a 3D holographic display that is showing the printing progress. Yes, a real Holographic display! It is called HoloDock, and uses a clever reimagining of the Pepper’s Ghost to create the impression of a real 3D volumetric image of the object you are printing.
It can also be used alone to visualize 3d objects, or you can just take with you the LumiFold 3D printer and leave the HoloDock display at home for maximum portability.
When used with the LumiFold, the image is genereated from the same projector that is used to cure the resin. It can also be used alone, in that case we offer different configurations to use it as 3d object visualizer.
The HoloDock Small can be used with a PC and any monitor, projector, or with your IPhone with the app that is provided.
The HoloDock Bigcan be used with a PC and any monitor, projector, or with your IPad with the provided app.
Our goal on IndieGoGo is to get the LumiFold into the hands of early adopters like you as soon as possible. We want you to be involved, whether to provide feedback on the experience, and we’ll be hard at work too, delivering updates and new functionality on a regular basis to add more performance and capabilities to the LumiFold.

Update: technical details and other questions
Q: Which resin do you use?
A: we are currently using Spot-A materials, Spot GP. It works well and layer curing time is approx. 10 seconds on our Acer x1260 projector. We are currently evaluating other brands.
Q: what is xy resolution?
A: it is related to projector resolution and distance to the tray.
With a 1024x768 projector approx 30cm over the tray the resolution is ~0.2mm and can be increased by using an higher resolution projector, or with a shorter distance.
Q: what is provided, and what should I need?
A: You need to have one projector, a Pc with Usb ports, and UV curing resin.
Q: What are shipping costs?
A: Shipping options for each customer will be comunicated soon before shipping.
You will be able to choose the shipping option you like. If there will be import taxes, we will help you understanding how much they will cost you.
