One of the little known stories in the history of LGBT rights is that of Richard Adams and Anthony “Tony” Sullivan. In 1975, thanks to one courageous county clerk in Boulder, Colorado, Richard and Tony were one of six couples to be legally married. Because Tony was an Australian citizen, Richard filed for resident status based on the marriage. But in an official letter from the Immigration and Naturalization Service, their petition was denied because they “failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots.” The couple then sued to prevent Tony’s deportation – thus filing the first federal lawsuit seeking equal treatment for a same-sex marriage in U.S. history.

Tony and Richard are truly pioneers in the battle for equal rights for same-sex marriage and gay bi-national immigration. Now, at this critical time, they are ready to go public with their amazing personal story in the hope that it will contribute to the national dialogue about these unjust policies.

Thanks to everyone who helped us surpass our initial goal of raising $30,000!  We are so grateful to all of you for believing in this film and helping us get this far!  We now have enough money to pay for the archival footage that will make Richard and Tony’s story come to life.

Unfortunately we do have some sad news to share. Richard has recently been diagnosed and is being treated for some very serious medical issues.  Just when the U.S. Supreme Court will decide the fate of Prop 8 and the constitutionality of The Defense of Marriage Act, Richard and Tony have been dealt another setback.  Because of this we need to go back into production to film the final chapter of Richard and Tony’s 43-year journey.

So we’re still asking for your help.  We need to raise another $20,000 in the next six days.  Marriage and immigration equality have never been in the national zeitgeist as much as they are right now. Our film will be a catalyst in changing people’s hearts and minds about these issues and your help will make it all possible.

The Impact

We are at an important juncture in the same-sex marriage and gay bi-national immigration movement. President Obama has come out in support for same-sex marriage and the end of the Defense of Marriage Act. While this shows progress, it has also spurred our opponents, giving them greater urgency in their fight. There are still 40,000 gay and lesbian bi-national couples who live without the security of knowing they will be able to live together in the same country. Our hope is this film will provide both historical context and a deeply moving personal story that shows how unfair and harmful these policies can be.
