MORE ABOUT SHE WHO MUST BURN
Angela (Sarah Smyth), a strong-willed and determined young woman, firmly believing in a woman's right to choose, refuses to leave the town’s planned-parenthood clinic even after its been shut down by the state. Her refusal to comply angers the Baarkers; a dangerous and fanatical right-wing family whose influence in this land runs both deep and high. Not only do they head the church, but they also claim to be able to speak directly to God, who has ordered them to cleanse the land, and the sin that Angela represents.
After receiving word that a young girl has had an abortion, the Baarkers hunt the child down. She narrowly escapes after watching her mother’s murder, and makes her way to the clinic where Angela takes her in. With the young girl at her side, Angela vows to protect her, but the Baarkers are closing in fast. As the tension between the two sides rises, so does the danger, and each one is driven further than ever before to fight for what they believe.

MORE ABOUT LARRY
Kent on set of ‘The Bitter Ash’ (1963)
Born in 1933 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Larry Kent moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to study theatre and philosophy at The University of British Columbia. Finding the medium of the stage limiting, Kent moved on to film, shooting his first short film entitled 'HASTINGS STREET' in 1962.
Kent wrote and directed the existential Canadian indie, post- beatnik, pre-hippie classic ‘The Bitter Ash’ in 1963 and tirelessly toured the film despite the controversy it garnered nationwide. His follow-up film, ‘Sweet Substitute’ made money in the United States, a first for any Canadian independent picture. Together with his third picture, the proto-feminist film ‘When Tomorrow Dies’, these three movies comprise Kent's "Vancouver Trilogy".
Kent moved to Montreal in the late 1960s where he began making films that exemplified the wild, drug informed spirit of the youth driven counterculture. His 1967 film ‘High’ premiered at the Montreal Film Festival the same year as the groundbreaking Arthur Penn film ‘Bonnie and Clyde’. That film's star, Warren Beatty, was one of ‘High's’ strongest supporters, along with legendary German filmmaker Fritz Lang, who headed the jury that year. Screenshot from ‘High’ (1967)
During the 1970s and throughout the 80's, Kent continued to explore various aspects of the human condition in his work. Though he slowed down in the 90's somewhat, he made a stunning return to form in 2005 with what is perhaps his finest effort, ‘The Hamster Cage’, a demented black comedy/psychodrama that is as funny as it is disturbing. ‘The Hamster Cage’ won the jury prize at the 2005 Austin Fantastic Fest.
In 2009, Kent completed work on another film, ‘Exely’, in Vancouver and has plans for several more in the near future. Kent has built himself an independent film legacy churning out wild, provocative and thought provoking films for over fifty years. His next project, ‘She Who Must Burn’, is set to go into production in August of 2013.
A WORD FROM LARRY
One of the central themes I’ve focused on as a filmmaker over the past 50 years is the rights of women. As the only male in a family totally comprised of females, I feel very passionate that a woman should have the right to do what she wants with her own body.
‘She Who Must Burn’ pits a strong willed, courageous woman against a family of right wing religious fanatics. The film grabs the audience by the throat in the first scene and doesn’t let them go until the last frame. I believe ‘She Who Must Burn’ has the potential to be my most dynamic and powerful film yet.
