Of her critically acclaimed solo evening at Danspace Project, The New York Times said “Ms. Velez-Jackson demonstrates her own formidable presence as she bursts into the space….A choreographer who is not afraid of being (or showing) ugly onstage, she disarms her audiences with humor..."
Hi. I'm Larissa Velez-Jackson,
Choreographer, theater-director and comedic dance provocateur. I'm also one of two Americans selected from 1023 applicants from all over the world for this year’s danceWeb Scholarship program in Vienna. This would be a dream come true for me: 5 weeks of intensive study of contemporary performance with the greatest artists from all over the world at ImPulsTanz, Vienna International Dance Festival. To exchange ideas with global artists, teachers and a 1-on-1 artistic mentor at this level would be massively impactful on my career. It is sure to be a life-changing experience and I'd like to share it with you! Here is what I plan to create as the fruits of my experience in Vienna:
LARISSA REPORTS ON IMPULSTANZ!
I will chronicle my time in residency in a special Viennablog, chock-full of photos, video, songs, movement scores, and notes from week-long intensive workshops (such as a writing workshop with Claudia LaRocco of The New York Times and Voguing with the incredible Archie Burnett). Most importantly, I will broadcast a weekly video show on the Internet during my residency where I'll report on all the creative, exciting, unpredictable things that go on at this wonderful artist/residency/festival/extravaganza. I hope to interview art stars of the European dance world, as well as tell you all the behind-the-scenes tour jetes! As project backers, you'll have a stake in my process, with opportunities to make requests of my reporting, learn about and even ask questions of European dance celebrities at the festival. You’ll also get regular updates about my month-long experience and receive personalized thank-you's featured in the blog. I will literally be taking you all to Europe with me. I really need your contributions to get me there!!!!
WHY RAISE $ IF I'VE ALREADY BEEN AWARDED THE SCHOLARSHIP???
In order to participate in the program, I need to secure the co-funding of my scholarship. This 1/3 of the scholarship ($2,850) needs to be provided by June 1st, 2012.
Unlike European participants who get government funding, participants from America generally have to secure private donations from family, friends, and amazing supporters like you. In moments like these, I must look to my near and dear community to help make my dream come true! The upside is that with this IndiGoGo campaign, I'll be able to bring all of you with me on this exciting adventure!
$2,850 -1/3 of the danceWEB program cost
$1050 - My meals for 5 weeks (not included in scholarship)
Thanks for taking the time to listen and I hope that with your contribution I can be an ambassador (and happy troublemaker) from Newark, New Jersey, making awesome things happen in Vienna.
The Rewards for Giving!!!!
Check out only some of the one-of-a-kind rewards donated by my favorite teachers and highly-esteemed colleagues for my project campaign. I truly see this IndiGoGo campaign as a brilliant piece of social choreography that can create spirit and health-expanding experiences for all of us from start to finish!
