"What's the Secret Knock?"
Want to have a spare key in case you get locked out, but hate the idea of just leaving one under the welcome mat for anyone to find? That's where the Knock Knock Lock comes in: leave yourself a spare key that no one but you can get, because it's inside your house! Attach the Knock Knock Lock to the inside of your door, drop in a spare key, and record your secret pattern. That's it! The Knock Knock Lock can be used for anything from your office door, to your dorm room, to the front door of your apartment or house.
Here's a video of the Knock Knock Lock prototype in action:
Knocking out your secret pattern on the door will activate a motor inside the Knock Knock Lock that slides a tray, containing your spare key, out from under the door. All you have to do is grab it and let yourself in.
Ease of Entry
Who is the Knock Knock Lock for? Anyone who wants to leave themselves a spare key that's easy and fun to get, without exposing it to unwanted intruders. We created the Knock Knock Lock to solve the age-old problem of locking yourself out of your room. We (Max and Andy) go to college together, and used to have this problem all the time. Never again will one of us go to take a shower in the communal bathroom down the hall, forget our keys, and have to wait in the hallway in just a towel for someone to let us in.
Oh, the shame...
Right now, the only ways to leave yourself a spare key are either unsafe or a total eyesore. The Knock Knock Lock is the fake rock of the 21st century: it's easy to use and unobtrusive. Plus, unwanted intruders can't get to it because it sits on the inside of your door, not the outside. And, at less than a third of the price of other automated lock systems currently on the market, it won't break the bank.
The Knock Knock Lock mounts to the inside of your door, near the floor. A connected sensor, attached to the door, picks up vibrations. When you knock the right pattern on the door, a small tray with your spare key on it slides out from under the door so that you can grab the key and let yourself in.
Any backer who purchases the Early Bird Special or Knock Knock Lock perk will receive their very own Knock Knock Lock once production has been completed. Plus, for backers who don't want to spring for the full price of the Knock Knock Lock but still want to support the project, we have less expensive perks that offer some awesome goodies: hilarious jokes, cool stickers, and even awesome t-shirts, so that everyone can show off their support for the Knock Knock Lock in style.
Once our project is fully funded, we will be able to work on improving our current design and preparing the Knock Knock Lock for mass production. To start, we'll create a more refined version of our prototype. Right now it works as a proof-of-concept, but we still have a lot of work to do. The Knock Knock Lock needs to be light, small, durable, and problem-free.
We are already working on finding parts and building a finished product. We'll write the code, debug it, and debug it some more. We'll test out different designs to see what works best. Once we have a more refined model, we'll test it extensively to see what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change before we have a final product.
The Knock Knock Lock is pretty awesome already, but we know that there is a ton of room for improvement. Our current prototype isn't quite ready for our end-users, and we need to test out our new design to make sure it works perfectly.
DISCLAIMER: Remember, while the Knock Knock Lock will make it easy for you to leave yourself a spare key, anyone who knows the password can get your key too! We do not accept any responsibility for damages caused by using the Knock Knock Lock: the Knock Knock Lock shouldn't be the only thing keeping people out of your house.
The biggest challenge we need to overcome is researching and testing smaller, more efficient parts for the Knock Knock Lock. Right now, the prototype is still bulky and unprotected, and we need to consolidate all of the components into one neat, aesthetically-pleasing package. Plus, we have to finish testing our final design to make sure it works well, is secure, and is as easy to set up and use as possible.
It is our goal to make the most durable and effective product we can, and that means checking and re-checking every part used to make the Knock Knock Lock before we finalize the design and move on to mass production.
