We have a compelling story, an amazing cast & crew, and a large part of the budget in place. Now we need your help paying for a helicopter to shoot the awesome ocean scenes that create the sense of freedom that this film promotes. If you like what we are doing, please support this project. Thank you!
Behind the story
Land. will be a fiction feature film about a young Moroccan windsurfer, who sets out on an epic journey along the Moroccan Atlantic coast towards Europe.
In the spring of 2002, I visited Morocco for the first time and was immediately taken by this beautiful country. In search of good windsurf spots, I ended up in the small fishing village of Moulay Bouzarqtoune. There was a group of children and young men hanging around us most of the day. Some of them had learned how to windsurf exceptionally well, sharing old, damaged equipment left behind by the tourists.
Years later, I returned to Morocco and became friends with several of these local windsurfers. The better I got to know them, the clearer it became how confusing their living circumstances were. On the one hand they lived in this beautiful surfer’s paradise. On the other hand they lived on the brink of poverty in the face of all our wealth and freedom. They were better surfers than we were but could not afford good equipment. They were friends with European women who wore bikinis on the beach, but they were too poor to marry the women from their village. Western culture had infiltrated every aspect of their lives, yet they could never truly be part of it. They watched us come and go, but for them the borders were closed.
It was during this visit that I first had the idea to make a film about these Moroccan windsurfers. I imagined what would happen if one of them would windsurf to Europe. I wrote a treatment and presented the story to Moroccan windsurfing star Boujmaa Guilloul and my friends from the village. They were ecstatic.
From then on, I worked with them on developing the film. Moroccan writer Abdelhadi Samih helped me write the script and much to our surprise our project was invited to Robert Redford's Sundance Lab and the Binger Filmlab. I also knew that I wanted real windsurfers to act in the film. Again I got lucky when it turned out that two windsurfers from Moulay, Fettah Ahllmara and Soufian Sahli, had great raw acting talent.
Now, years after my first visit to Moulay, many great people have joined us on our journey to make this movie. Bero Beyer, who produced the Oscar Nominated film 'Paradise Now', is producing the film. Renowned actors Mohamed Majd ('Incendies', 'Syriana') and Thekla Reuten ('The American', 'In Bruges') will star opposite my friends from the village. Professional windsurfer and writer Lucy Robson has helped us strengthen the female characters in the script. Acclaimed director of photography Jasper Wolf (Golden Calf winner 'Code Bue') will help me realize my visual ideas. We are planning to shoot later this summer to release the film to a wide international audience in 2013.
I am looking forward to presenting the film to you and I thank you for your support!

Land. tells the story of young wave windsurfer Taha who has befriended many of the European windsurfers that visit his tiny fishing village on the Moroccan Atlantic coast. He has eagerly adopted their free way of speaking and views on the world and often finds himself dreaming of a life far away. But reality has him trapped in the village since he can’t get a visa or leave his aging father Hakim who has become increasingly dependent on him.
One summer changes everything. Taha meets Alexandra, the Dutch girlfriend of his good friend Finn. He desperately tries to keep from falling in love, yet, when she leaves at the end of summer his heart feels broken and the empty village more than ever feels like a prison he can’t escape. The human spirit however, often shines most brightly in its darkest hour, and finally, Taha's desire to break free and leave his empty life behind prevails. Taha sets off on an epic adventurous journey across the Atlantic coast towards Europe on his windsurf board. Initially he feels liberated and free, but as the wind carries him ever farther from home he finds that the pursuit of dreams does not come without sacrifice.
Why we are doing this crowdfunding project
Aerial shots are essential to capturing the sense of freedom this film promotes. But renting a helicopter to film these wide ocean windsurfing scenes for an extended period of time is very expensive. This is still beyond our budget, even with the financial support of the Dutch Film Fund, the CoBO Fund and the Medienboard. With this campaign we aspire to raise a minimum of $40,000 to get this helicopter flying over the Moroccan Atlantic coast this summer, carrying our crew.
