Il Film

Sono Diego Pascal Panarello, filmmaker e suonatore di Scacciapensieri.

In questi ultimi due anni sono stato alla ricerca del'anima di un piccolo pezzo di ferro che suona la musica del cielo e dello spazio. Il risultato della mia ricerca è contenuto in un diario filmato intitolato There's Nothing to Think.

Il mio sogno è arrivare in Yakutia (Siberia) per terminare le riprese.

E poter trasformare il mio diario in un film...

Siamo in Sicilia, sulle rotaie che circondano l’Etna. Le pietre laviche del vulcano più alto d'Europa evocano atmosfere lunari.

Lo Scacciapensieri, che nel mondo prende nomi e forme differenti, si nasconde negli angoli di ogni cultura.

In un unico oggetto si racchiudono uguaglianze e differenze tra popoli lontani.

Suonatori, fabbri e etnomusicologi raccontano di questo strumento musicale antichissimo e di come sia diventato un antidoto a piccoli dolori.

In Yakutia, la "Mecca" dello Scacciapensieri, è lo strumento nazionale; donne uomini e bambini lo suonano in un inno alla felicità.

Ma com’è possibile che un vicino parente di strumenti preistorici come l’arco della musica o il didjeridoo, suoni allo stesso modo di un modernissimo sintetizzatore?

Il film ripercorre miti e leggende di questo oggetto, chiave simbolica delle porte dell’anima e della mente.

Perchè un film sullo Scacciapensieri?

Il piacere. Questo film nasce dal piacere che provo suonando lo Scacciapensieri. Nel mondo, esistono migliaia di nomi per lo stesso strumento. Ma il nome italiano “Scacciapensieri” lo descrive perfettamente, l'ho capito suonandolo: le vibrazioni al cervello, la ripetizione percussiva del suono e la tecnica di respirazione utilizzata, inducono il suonatore a leggeri stati di alterazione della coscienza, che qualcuno definisce “stati di trance”: in quel momento ogni pensiero svanisce per dare spazio al piacere.

La Sicilia. Sono siciliano e in Sicilia lo Scacciapensieri è indissolubilmente legato all’idea di mafia. In film come "Il Padrino" o "Salvatore Giuliano" appaiono i “picciotti” mafiosi che lo suonano. In realtà questi “picciotti” prima di essere arruolati nell’esercito mafioso, erano semplici contadini che suonavano lo scacciapensieri nella solitudine dei loro pascoli. Lo Scacciapensieri, è da sempre uno strumento per meditare e non per minacciare.

Un altro pianeta. Lo Scacciapensieri è uno strumento molto antico, ma il grafico prodotto dalla sua onda sonora è uguale a quello di un contemporaneo sintetizzatore. Tra gli strumenti preistorici, lo scacciapensieri, è l’unico che invece di imitare il suono della voce o della natura, imita il suono del cielo e dello spazio come provenendo da un altro pianeta.

The Film

Hi, I'm Diego Pascal Panarello, the director of the film and a Jew's Harp player. 

In these two years I've been looking for the soul of a little piece of iron that plays music of skies and space. The result of this research is a video-diary called There's Nothing to Think. 

My dream is to go to Yakutia (Siberia) and finish the shooting of the film.

And transform the video-diary in a real film...

We are in Sicily, on the railway which goes around Mt. Etna. The volcano’s lava stones evoke lunar atmospheres. 

The Jew's Harp exists everywhere on earth in the corners of each culture. A unique object that unites and differentiated far people.


Musicians, blacksmiths and ethnomusicologists, all tell of an ancient musical instrument which is becoming an antidote to little sufferings.

In Yakutia, mecca of the Jew's Harp, it is the national instrument; in the steppe, men, women and children play it daily as a hymn to happiness.


How is it possible that a close relative to prehistoric instruments like the musical arc or the didjeridoo sounds like a modern synthesizer?

The film chronicles myths and legends of this object, symbolic key that opens the doors of our soul and mind.

Why a film about Jew's Harp?

The Pleasure. This film was born from the pleasure that I feel by playing the Jew's Harp. In the world, there are thousands of names for the same instrument, one for each country. But the Italian one, “Scacciapensieri", describes it perfectly and I understood that, just by playing it. Its vibrations provoke a direct massage to the brain, the percussive repetition of the sound coupled with the respiration technique can induce into a state of trance: in that  moment, every thought vanishes to give space to pleasure.

Sicily. I am Sicilian and the Harp in Sicily is inextricably linked to the idea of the Mafia. In movies like "The Godfather" or "Salvatore Giuliano" there are "picciotti" who play it. Actually, these bandits, before enrolling in the Mafia, were simple shepherds, who played the mouth organ in the solitude of their pastures. The Harp has always been an instrument for meditatation, not to be threatening.

Another Planet. The Jew's Harp is a very ancient instrument, but the graph produced by its sound wave is the exact same graph produced by the waveform of a synthesizer. It's the most unusual among the prehistoric instruments, because instead of imitating human voices or sounds of nature, it recalls the sound of the stellar space as if it came from another planet.
