Hey! The remainder of the print run (a couple hundred books) is now for sale at
The books ended up being rather big, 12 by 8.7 inches. I don't think there is a single page where I'm not happy with the print quality. The printer, Jelgavas tipogrāfija did their job really well!
We've reached the goal, just hours before the deadline. Phew! Thank you everyone! You are awesome! Now, it'll take a couple of weeks to get the books to print, and then two more for printing. So everyone who ordered a book can expect theirs sometime in march.
After the books have shipped, the comic book will be for sale on www.jaybird-comic.com
Thank you again for making this possible.
Hello, my name is Lauri Ahonen. I'm an illustrator from Finland. Me and my brother Jaakko made a comic book, "Jaybird", that tells the story of a very small and very scared little bird, who lives alone in a great big house with his mother. He's never been outside the house, and won't, as long as his mother has a say about it.
You can read the first 60 pages of the comic here: http://www.jaybird-comic.com
What's unusual about this comic book is that it's nearly silent. There are a few lines of dialogue, but mostly the narrative relies on images. It is our first comic book, and we're pretty excited about it.
Printing the book
We're doing this project on indiegogo to fund a print run of 1500 copies. The run will be printed and distributed in north america, and is intended for american audiences.
The price estimate for printing is $10,500, and it's based on the average of two price quotes from separate printers. We estimate the costs for storage and distribution to be around $500. The book will be shipped directly to the Amazon Fulfillment central warehouse, and distributed from there.
For $1, you'll get a digital wallpaper of the Bad Birds (as seen above). Any image ratio or monitor resolution will be available.
$5 will get you the contents of the book in an easy to read .pdf file. And the digital wallpaper.
And $15 will get you 20 choice strips from an earlier comic of mine, dr. badger (sample above). These aren't and won't be made available anywhere else. Also, you'll get all of the above.
For $40 you will get the hardcover book (6x9 in, or possibly slightly larger). The book will have 128 full color pages and your name recognized as a backer. You'll get the other perks mentioned above, as well.
The $100 perk will get you any page of the book you want as a signed, medium-sized (16.5x11.7in) poster. Just pick a page (or spread) in the .pdf file, and I'll get on it. And you'll get the book, the strip comic, the .pdf and the wallpaper as well.
The biggest, $250 perk is quite unique - you'll get a portrait of yourself as a Jaybird, and the portrait will be included in the actual comic as a painting on the wall of the Jaybirds house. I will need a photo of you to paint your likeness. This option will of course include all the rewards of the other perks.
Wow! More than a thousand dollars on the first day! I'm speechless. You guys rock.
Also, I noticed that I hadn't included shipping information in the perks. Yikes! So, if you are not in the United States and had already claimed any of the following perks: "The Jaybird comic book", "Poster of your choice" or "Your portrait, in the comic", you'll get free shipping for them. My bad.
I edited the relevant perks to include a reminder to add $10 for shipping if you're outside the US.
