Story of the Recent Effort to Build and Sustain Jakmel Ekspresyon Community Art Center
We passed $3000 on Indiegogo.com last night. This will enable us to pay the rest of rent for the 1st 6 months. I am so excited that we will get to keep this building. There are so many exciting workshops coming up that will benefit the community in Jakmel. Thank you everyone for passing the campaign forward, donating and lots of words of support. We will continue our fundraising with a February benefit in Chicago. The details will be posted shortly . Thank you again everyone!
I just recently returned from Jacmel and saw the building for the first time. It is completely re-energizing for anyone to be in that space and feel the excitement of a new year. We worked hard to define our direction for the new year and organized a grand opening New Years Eve event.
Badio “pheonix” Junior, the Exhibitions Coordinator, curated a gallery show that included artists from all over Jacmel. The gallery and courtyard was filled with beautiful artwork. During the early hours of the evening the space was filled with artists and people from the local community. It is inspiring to me that everyone in the community is supportive of the arts. For me it was the perfect start to the new year.
During the week we held a number of meetings and work sessions. The advancement of the philosophy of JE through organizational structure was the main topic. This included the development of internal documentation. Code of conduct contracts are being developed and include an anti-discrimination and harassment policy. Everyone will have to sign and acknowledge this space a space free of discrimination. We are also developing new surveys for the members that attend workshops. This will further our “from the ground up” philosophy by giving the members an avenue of expressing their needs and concerns. We also discussed policies to insure a family friendly space.
Please help us continue to realize the next year and help us to support the voices of Jacmel, Haiti. If you missed your chance to make a donation through this campaign visit our Donate page and make a contribution. Even the smallest donations add hope and resources to our cause.
For more information about JE visit us online at our website and on Facebook. If anyone is interested in traveling to Jakmel and experiencing the culture of Haiti please contact Je's Co-Director, Sue Frame via email.
The Haitian people are filled with heart and the world should know and see that good things are happening on a local level.
Thank you everyone!
