What We Need & What You Get
First and foremost we need RENT and UTILITIES! With only one main sponsor, even finding the mere 700 dollars a month to keep the center open can be a trying task for us. We often take what we earn from teaching private music lessons to achieve this, leaving little money for food. As grants are scarce in the Bahamas, we need 10,000 to truly provide all the services mentioned above, for both the instructors and some of the following materials: paintbrushes, paint, markers, paper, ink cartridges to print our flyers, a stapler, seeds, snacks for programs/fundraisers, new instruments. Furthermore, we also need to repair a few things around here as well: the tile, a window, the office door, the guitar, a piano, two drum heads...and the list goes on.
We would also like to create a website to help us keep the traffic coming to the center, and the funds that follow. We have the volunteers to do this (who, for all their amazing help, we would like to feed as well!), but we still need to purchase the server space.
Besides lots of love and leaving our doors ever open to you here at the center, there are some perks for your support: An old school mix cd from our local musicians playing original unreleased material and a few island classics, a work of art from our featured artist Zyandric Jones, and even a three night stay at a local resort on the island (airfare not included, so save those miles baby!).
The ImpactWe care about people in our community and believe that anything that interests them is worth fighting for. We are proof that community centers are bigger than borders and race and gender lines. We feel that these activities truly help people change their realities. Too many kids in our community feel discouraged and unsupported and therefore turn to the negative activity that has changed this island, and the cycle continues. It just takes one lesson or workshop for a kid to feel like he/she is a part of something greater than themselves, like there is a bigger purpose in their lives. And eventually that inspiration grows and is spread throughout the community.
Other Ways You Can HelpAs starving artists, we understand better than anyone that money is scarce these days. We made the choice to do community outreach for a living, and WE UNDERSTAND. So can't give? No worries. Spread the love. Forward this link on twitter, facebook, a blog, an email, even snail mail. No? alright. Well any help is . . . helpful, to say the leasat. Buena onda!
