iPads for Literacy

The Sioux Falls Area Literacy Council is trying to raise $3000 to purchase 6 iPads. These are invaluable teaching tools for new adult readers.

iPads for Litearcy

Welcome to the Sioux Falls Area Literacy Council.  We have been helping adults learn to read since 1986.  We serve anyone who is 18 and older.  Our population of new readers is comprised of English and English as a second language learners.  We are hoping to raise $3000 to purchase 6 iPads.  These iPads will become invaluable tools in teaching reading, writing and spelling for adults.  Learning to read is a life changing event.

iPad technology is already deployed in our schools, helping emerging and struggling readers - with your financial help, we can better serve our diverse group of adult learners, from high school drop outs, refugees, parolees and maybe even the unexpected person, a neighbor or co-worker.

Raising the $3000 will allow us to lend the iPads to tutors and new readers on a weekly basis.

The Impact of Illiteracy

Did you know that 75% of state prison inmate did not complete high school or would be classified as low literate?  Only 29% of the U.S. population reads at an 8th grade level.  42 Million americans can't read at all.  Low literacy adds an estimated $240 Billion to the country's annual health care costs.  Non-productivity in the workforce and loss of tax revenue due to unemployemnt totals $225 Billion each year.

Your donation can help change that.  Help provide adults with the technology to learn to read and write.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you can't donate, will you help spread the word about us?  Share us on Facebook or Twitter.  You can always volunteer to tutor if not with us, with a local literacy organization.  Talking about illiteracy and its impact helps everyone.

Thanks
