My name is Evan Bass and I've been a middle and high school teacher for over 10 years. I have always taught in high needs public school because I believe that all students have a right to a quality education, and I've always wanted to give back to the community in a lasting way. My campaign is about bringing the internet into my classroom in a tangible, integrated way. I can support my students and plan my daily lessons in an entirely new, innovative, more individualized and data driven fashion if I can count on the use of laptops each day, and the only way for this to happen is for me to have my own class set. Technology is a very powerful tool, that is often inaccessible or spread too thin in education. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love technology, and I know that the possibilities are endless as to the ways that I can tailor my classroom to get the most out of each of my students and set them up to have the best math experience that they have ever had in their lives. This would be something that I've never seen before in a class, and I am fully committed toward making this dream a reality for myself and my students moving forward.
What We Need & What You Get
What I need is very simple. I would ideally like to purchase 25 Chromebook laptops. Each Chromebook costs about $240.00. I ultimately need closer to $6000 but I realize that people can donate more than my asking cost. Any money that is raised will go towards the purchase of Chromebooks, even if I do not reach my entire goal.
There will be a couple of perks for supporting this project.
1. If you donate 50 or more dollars, you will recieve a handwritten letter from one of my students explaining to you how these laptops have affected them in class this year.
2. If you donate 100 or more dollars, you will recieve a letter from a student, and a short movie that I will create, documenting the ways in which we are utilizing the Chromebooks in our classroom.
By donating towards this goal, you will be changing the face of mathematics in my classroom. Imagine the top brain surgeon in the country performing an operation. Now imagine this same person performing the same operation with tools from the 1980's. Very different results. This is the situation that many teachers face every year. I want to change this and the Internet is the key. Free programs exist that support learning and give students instant feedback on topics of the day. Websites that disguise practice and repetition(which are so important for retention and mastery) in the form of games are abundant. From instructional videos, to calculator and graphing tools, the possibilities are endless as to further supporting students towards their individual needs, but none of this can be unlocked and incorporated into my daily routines if we don't have computers.
Algebra is a gatekeeper class. It directly correlates towards success in high school and college moving forward. With this project, I can create a class that is innovative, fun, and extremely effective for all students. Think of all the people you know that hate math. It is alarmingly common. Each year, I can effectively break this cycle and produce learners who excel and are proud of their math accomplishments. I just needs the tools to support me in this endeavor.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you can't support this monetarily, you can help the cause be sending this link to anyone you know that cares about education, and wants to directly support students in the classroom. The more people who are aware of this project, the more likely it is for me to achieve my goal.
