Why Interlochen? Inspiration.
My name is Alexi Whitsel, I am sixteen years old, and I am a musician. I started playing violin when I was seven, and it quickly grew from a hobby to a passion. Ever since then, my family and I have worked hard to provide me with the best possible music education we can.
In 2011, I participated in an orchestra called the Western States Honors Orchestra; an ensemble comprised of highschoolers from Colorado and surrounding states. Although the orchestra itself wasn't anything out of the ordinary, it made me have an epiphany: I learn best from my peers. I prosper the most and learn the fastest when I am in a creative, competitive environment where my peers are just as or more talented than me. As soon as I got a taste of that kind of climate, I wanted more. That's where Interlochen comes in; the Interlochen Arts Academy is a high school in Michigan dedicated to training high quality visual artists, dancers, and musicians. After researching and sifting through many arts-schools and conservatories, I decided that Interlochen was the school I was searching for. I applied and auditioned, and to my great elation, was accepted. The only obstacle in my way was tuition: about fifty-four-thousand dollars. I received financial aid, but it was still not feasible for me to attend. So, with my dream deferred, I stayed in public school for yet another year. This year however, I auditioned, was accepted, and received a 4,000 dollar scholarship along with an extremely generous 40,000 dollars in financial aid.
If this were happening a couple of years ago, my parents would cover most of the cost, but they were both layed off from their jobs. On top of that, they have recently been fighting the mortgage company that is attempting to foreclose on our house, so although they are profoundly supportive in many other ways, they cannot support me financially.
So it has been up to me to raise the funds, mainly through means of playing violin on the street. If I raise enough funds (with your help), I will be able to fulfill my dream of living in a community that inspires creativity and passion for the arts. This will help me grow into a better person and musician, create a brighter future ahead of me, and in that future, allow me to give the gift of music to as many people as I can.
As far as funding is concerned, I want for there to be as little confusion as possible, so I am just going to lay everything on the table.
Interlochen's tuition/boarding for boarding seniors is $53,795.
I recieved a scholarship worth $4,000 along with a financial aid package worth $39,795.
So that means the final cost of tuition/boarding is $10,000.
However, there are also misc. fees such as a Mac laptop (required), laundry, performance attire, books, music lesson matierials, etc. Those add up to be about $7,000.
And after some figuring, (taking into account travel to and from school during breaks and renting a car for the initial trip out there), a good estimate for travel costs would be about $2,000.
So, tuition, fees, and travel end up being about $19,000.
But! Even if I don't reach my goal, ALL of your generous contributions will go towards my music education and only my music education.

Even if you do not have the rescources to contribute, I would still be extremely thankful for your help!
