I Need To See You...
Life is empty without the people in it..
Since 2006 I've been taking portraits of friends, strangers, musicians, painters, shooters, dancers, rebels, actors, farmers, beekeepers - and anyone else that caught my attention. There was a story to be had in every face, and the friendships made with a camera have become more valuable to me than the pictures themselves.
After 7 years I've decided to make a book called, "I Need To See You".
Why should this book be made?
We have grown accustom to the digital experience, but I still need to touch the photos I love. As a result I have produced a library of archival quality prints,
made hundreds of zines...
and even more art journals...
This book has been on my mind for a long time and will contain my strongest work to date.
While mainly focused on portraiture it will also be spliced with the odd summit,
I love Vancouver - my aim is to bring more attention to its art/music scenes, and make a tangible memoir available for the people in them.
While the beauty of the west is nearly inescapable, I am still attached to my creative roots out east, and this book would not be complete without them...
As this project runs I will be on a road trip to shoot talent that I've had my eye on in NY, Toronto, Windsor/Detroit and a bunch of places in between.
This will be the last stint of portraits before putting the book together.
My name is Jonathan Dy, I went to school for painting and became a self-taught pro photographer over the last few years.
While the principles of composition, colour and light are present in both mediums, the processes couldn't be more different... As a painter I thrived on intuition and isolation, with the camera I need to connect and take quick measurements of my surroundings. Although methods have changed, one thing that has remained consistent throughout my work is people - our emotions, gestures and motives are an endless source of exploration.
Over 100 high quality pages
Soft Cover (hard cover if I raise enough money)
No more than one picture per page
Signed and numbered
What I need to make it happen
I've set my goal at $3500. That will just barely cover the cost of printing and shipping for a limited edition of 100. The bigger the edition the lower the printing price goes per book. IF I can make it past that mark then I can consider a hard cover and possibly adding more pages. The more I raise the better the end product will be for everyone.
I also need money to shoot while I'm on the road until the end of June. When this campaign ends it will take a month to put the book together, and the more funds I have, the more time I can spend on detail.
I've set no limit to any of the perks, so the quality and quantity of this book is, to a great extent, in your hands.
I'm going to make this the best thing I've ever done. I'm going to pour so much love into each page it will make your eyes swell.
But I need all the help I can get.
Please contribute in any way that you can, post, tweet, and email it to anyone that might be interested - everything counts.
