It wasn't the victories on the court but it was the amazing triumphs off the court that made these girls true champions.
During the 2012-13 season, the McClymonds High School girls basketball team became a powerhouse on and off the court. Within a two year period, they went from a program known for decades as a loser, to champions of the Oakland Athletic League, the first since 1976. What the team accomplished on the court was definitely staggering, but the bigger breakthrough was off the court. The personal hardships these girls had to face were countless; from the murders of friends and siblings to being the primary caretaker of a mother affected by HIV. It's a lot more than any teenager should have to navigate through, and for this group of young women, life and games take on a different meaning.
Basketball is a breath of fresh air, an escape, a safe haven. It gives them a chance to avoid the trappings of the urban environment that await so many young women. Basketball motivates them to focus on and off the court; the team maintained a 3.9 GPA during their championship season. These girls are not done yet, and they have no plans on giving in or giving up on themselves or life. Basketball has taken and will take them to a whole different world. If you ask the team what they want to do, their response would be "I JUST WANNA BALL."
From the Director,
Robert “Fleetwood” Bowden:
As I sat in my cubicle at work and read the article about McClymonds’ girls championship basketball team, I was completely blown away by their strength, courage, and determination. The triumph of their journey was so inspiring and such a beautiful portrait of the essence of the young women that come from Oakland who are so often looked upon in such a negative light. I knew at that moment I had to take all the resources I had and get this amazing story to as many people as I could. I had been looking for a project to launch my directorial film debut and here it was. I can truly say that I am honored and blessed to be a part of this project. I am asking now that the community get behind these young women and support this film and help me bring this amazing story to the screen.
The goal of this project is to let the world see a beautiful rose as it grows from the concrete. Our hope is to find assistance within our community for these young ladies as they pursue their education, and to assist them in maintaining a positive life while becoming successful, shining examples in our communities.

What We Need
We started this film because of our passion for change, the love of our community, sports, equality, storytelling, and videography. Your generous donations will help post-production costs and spreading this film’s message. Our goal has been and continues to be to make films that matter. We were able to complete the initial filming for less than $10K, on over-extended credit cards and the generosity of strangers. It was a glorious adventure with stellar results. We'd do it all again in the same manner.
Yet making a film and getting it out into the world are two different ventures. In order to produce, distribute and get "I JUST WANNA BALL" into the world, we need help with the following expenses:
* Funds for distribution (DVDs, streaming, etc), posters, mailings, ads, etc.
* Funds for setting up screenings & premieres in the U.S. and abroad.
* Funds for entering film festivals.
* Funds for traveling to the film festivals that love and accept us.
Where will the funds go?
The clip above is a brief sample of the filming and production that we have accomplished with our own money, time, and dedication. With your contribution we will be able to continue to put the blood, sweat, and tears into the last legs of production for the film. Every donation will help the writers, editors, cameramen, and producers bring the story of I JUST WANNA BALL to a worldwide audience so that this piece of our history is not forgotten.
