THE STORY
There
is a group of people in the world today who are more persecuted than anyone
else, but they are not political or religious activists.
They are girls.
I AM A GIRL is an integrated project comprised of a feature length documentary, an online multimedia component and community outreach. I AM A GIRL tells the stories of ten different girls in ten different countries around the world. Through these personal stories, we will paint a picture of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century.
The simple fact of being born a girl means you are more likely to be subjected to violence, disease, poverty and disadvantage than any other group on the planet. Did you know that in the world today 62 million girls of primary school age are out of school? And that every minute a young woman dies from maternal mortality? And three quarters of the worlds HIV sufferers under 25 are women?
When I was made aware of these horrifying statistics, I decided to make a film to help bring these issues to a wider audience and facilitate change.
The first two stories were shot in July 2010 in India and Cambodia. In the last three months, the trailers have been viewed over 2,700 times and in the last month, website traffic (www.iamagirl.com.au) has increased by over 170 percent.
We have already secured generous grants from the Intrepid Foundation and Womens Plans Foundation, which enabled us to produce the website and trailer, http://www.iamagirl.com.au/the-film/the-clips/. But we need further funding to complete the project and reach a global audience.
WHAT WE NEED TO TELL OUR STORY
To complete the second phase of this
project we need to raise $20,000 by the end of May 2011. These funds will be
specifically used to film a story in Papua New Guinea and Australia to complete
four out of the ten stories, as well as updating the website and multimedia
components. If we raise more than $20,000 we will put all additional finance
towards the next stage of production.
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP
We really appreciate your support even if you cant help financially. Just directing your friends, family and colleagues to the IndieGoGo site will help increase awareness about our project.
