What's The Howard Roberts Project all about?
This is a flexible funding campaign, which means that 100% of the contributions go towards the project, and the Tribute will happen regardless of budget. Full Funding will ensure a high production quality.
Jay Roberts presents this remarkably anticipated Recording and Video project that captures the spirit of The BIG NOW, a tribute to his father, the late Howard Roberts (HR), A true Jazz Guitar legend of the 20th century, HR was also a revolutionary educator who literally changed the lives of thousands of players.
This immense labor of love will capture his remarkable wit, images, words of wisdom and the astonishing tales that so many are eager to share
The Project will feature the historically great session artists HR worked with in the television, motion picture and recording studios of Hollywood, as well as many other colleagues from his brilliant career.
This CD/DVD venture will include a full studio CD as well as a DVD documenting the “making of” The Howard Roberts Project. A live concert featuring artists from this project will also be captured on DVD, along with a historical narrative and video interviews with some of the musicians influenced by HR. Recording all ORIGINAL HR MUSIC, the Grooves will span from straight ahead Jazz to Funk, and Latin to Soul will give these tremendous players eclectic room to stretch out, all while sharing their feelings and memories about, and missing, HR for more than 20 years.
This Project features "THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS" and " ORIGINAL HR TUNES"
Who is Howard Roberts?
“One of the most heard guitar players in the world.” Throughout the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, HR was one of the busiest guitarists in Los Angeles, appearing on hundreds of album, movie and TV dates, and his own LPs established him as one of the premier jazz guitar stylists of his generation. He applied a lifelong passion for learning theory to writing books and columns as well as conducting legendary seminars. His efforts raised the standards for guitar education and culminated in the establishment of Guitar Institute of Technology, the world’s first full-time contemporary guitar program. (now Musicians Institute)
HR’s accomplishments are far too vast to detail in this forum, but a recent article in Vintage Guitar Magazine, by Jim Carlton, gives a good historical perspective:
There is also a truly monumental Howard Roberts website, managed by Mike Evans:
This Wikipedia page also has good detailed info
Who is Jay Roberts?
As the son of two professional Jazz Musicians, Jay was inspired to listen to, learn and play music at an early age. He began teaching guitar and drums at age 14, and went on to open ROBERTS MUSIC INSTITUTE in 2004.(the leading guitar school in the Northwest)
Howard and Jay were very close and collaborated on numerous educational projects and publications. They worked together daily until HR’s tragic passing in 1992. As he did for so many, HR instilled in Jay his set of ‘lifemanship’ qualities that have proven indelible: Kindness, Honesty & Chops
Today, following in his Fathers footsteps as a uniquely talented Improviser, Jay is excited to honor what Howard frequently referred to as The BIG NOW… Collaborating with HR’s friends and colleagues creates an inspiring and significant opportunity, and one in which YOU play a pivotal role-

What has been accomplished so far?
Jay has recently finished compiling the Original HR Tunes, including getting the charts together. The Video crew is geared up, and the dates are booked. We are recording at Studio X in Seattle May 7th, and at Capital Records in LA, May 31st, and June 1st. The project has now wrapped up the first phase of fundraising with indiegogo. (jan 31). Jay has also completed 13 interviews with LA based session players, capturing their HR stories and insights on Video for the documentary.
What’s the budget to complete the Howard Roberts Project DVD and CD? $4o,ooo.
We have received $18,625., in private funding to date, (not through indiegogo) along with dozens of emails eagerly offering support. The Indiegogo campaign raised $12086, so our current total is $30711.
The $9289 balance we are currently seeking will:
- cover the completion of the studio CD
- Further develop the production of the DVD ( “making of" the HR Project, interviews, historical HR narratives and live concert footage).
- pay for compensation and travel for musicians, studio time, mixing and mastering, video shooting, editing, artwork, layout, mechanical royalties, and duplication costs.
Important Crowdfunding projects sometimes acquire more funding than requested. Please note that this is only a beginning. Give early. Give often. Not only is the budget for this recording project somewhat modest, but there is much more to be done. There are dozens of unmarked reel to reel tapes to be transferred, stacks of handwritten charts, notes and drawings to be catalogued, and so much more. Images of these amazing archives will be brought to you weekly on this very site. Our intent is to make true Howard Roberts fans very, very happy…
