Check out media coverage of this campaign in USA TODAY , the Ottawa Citizen, and CBC.
I have been given an incredible opportunity to farm on a beautiful piece of land in Almonte, outside of Ottawa, Ontario. This community is excited to eat local food, and I am excited to grow it.
Much of my work has been guided by my interest in how food makes its way from farm to fork. My first experience farming in Italy ignited a deep passion for righting the path of our food system, and connecting people to the sources of their food. I have farmed in Connecticut, and taught at The Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley CA. In Michigan, I managed a year-round CSA at Michigan State University's Student Organic Farm, managed MSU's Organic Farmer Training Program, and consulted with Ann Arbor's Parks & Recreation Commission to create a sustainable, productive, educational, and community-focused farm in a city park.
I believe that these experiences position me well to start my own farm, and to manage an educational farming program.
Where Will the Money Go?
Take a look at how your donations can be used:
$10: A harvest knife
$50: Trellising supplies for growing heirloom tomatoes
$250: A tool that efficiently seeds salad greens
$500: Compost for soil fertility management
$750: Supplies for pest management and irrigation
$1,000: Hand tools for cultivating, weeding, and harvesting
$10,000: A deer fence that will allow for a significant increase in production, as well as wages for two local youth
$25,000: Larger quantities of the supplies/tools listed above, as well as wages for more employees, allowing us to increase production
Anything beyond this will be used to create a vibrant educational farming program where local youth learn leadership and farming skills while providing wholesome food to their community.
If you have ever seen the look on a kid's face when he unearths a potato or when she sees that a planted seed has sprouted, you know that connecting people to the sources of their food is not a small thing. Imagine if everyone knew their farmers, just as they know their doctors, dentists, lawyers and plumbers. The world would be a different place.
Initially, the farm will provide food to the community and local restaurants. Over time, the educational program will teach young people where food comes from, provide them with meaningful work, and build community.
Can't afford to Donate? You can still help!
Please consider helping me to get the word out about this project. Indiegogo has great sharing tools, and I think that we can harness a lot of support from our family, friends, community, and social networks together.
