FIRST, we started with a STORY. Yet, we are still being overlooked, marginalized. Then, we started a Support Black Deaf Film Movement. Finally and slowly, the movie industry and the public are starting to take note. Now, we are starting an American Sign Language (ASL) Black Cinema that will center on the black deaf perspective through Black Deaf Lens as well as address issues and topics regarding diversity and multicultural perspectives within the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. THESE are our storylines for the world." - Queen Jade, Writer/Producer/Director
Black Deaf Filmmaker Wants To Address Lack Of Representation w/ Film & TV Projects
NEW CONTENT FOR OUR AUDIENCE! HELP US COMPLETE THIS ONE! SLATED FOR PREMIERE IN MARCH 2014.
DEAR INDIE FILM LOVERS AND SUPPORTERS!
My name is Queen Jade. I am an award-winning indie filmmaker who happens to be deaf. I am the FIRST Jamaican-American Deaf filmmaker, a pioneer in my own right. I have been producing and writing films for over 20 years. I am also a visionary and an activist. I believe in social change and social justice. I believe in promoting, spreading and increasing awareness about the lack of Deaf African-American actors cast in roles in the mainstream movie industry and in television.
What I have come to notice is that we have a huge lack of representation of BLACK DEAF CULTURE who are American Sign Language (ASL) users in FILM & TV. We especially lack representation addressing issues regarding diversity, intersectionalities and Deaf People of Color. We all have stories to share, so many! And we need your help to tell our stories.
Now we have a new film in the works. We just completed production of "THE SHATTERED MIND." We've exhausted all production funding and are raising more for postproduction. Our goal is to complete the film before the end of 2013 and get "The Shattered Mind" submitted to Tribeca by November 29th. Since we are using Indiegogo, our campaign will run for 60 days, this way we can raise the first part of $14,000 in time to finish "The Shattered Mind."
ABOUT THE SHATTERED MIND FILM:
The film is centered upon a proud Black Deaf family with a captivating story that has never been told before in the mainstream film industry. THE SHATTERED MIND is a 40-minute short film that explores a black deaf family's journey while their daughter, Zhane Rain struggles to overcome adversity; traumatic childhood past and hearing loss.
Zhane Rain is a misplaced teenager who is trying to find herself in a self-respecting Deaf family and to overcoming unusual psychological and neurological conditions. Ultimately, her biggest battle is in dealing with recurring nightmares due to amnesia from the traumatic experience she had as a child.
OUR AWESOME TALENTED PRODUCTION TEAM:
Producers: Cherie Johnson, Jade, Linda Mosca-Ginis, Deborah Broadus-Muskauski, Marcia Bryan-Brown, and Andrew & Lesa Bryan.
HELP US CREATE THREE MORE CONTENTS FOR THE YEAR 2014!
We have two new TV-oriented pilots we'd like to produce for the year 2014 and a feature film. We want to expand an American Sign Language (ASL) Black Cinema for the mainstream, be it film, television or web-series. THE TWO ESSENCES is a dramedy, a contemporary story about a modern-day deaf mother-daughter relationship; a day trader mother, who one day quitted her job to go back to school. The other pilot is an original drama series entitles KAOMI'S THREE CHARMS, about a New York hard-of-hearing filmmaker who befriends a deaf playwright, an actor and a musician. Finally, CLEOPATRA'S DESIRES is about a writer who struggles to make sense of her dark past. Last year, we pitched KAOMI'S THREE CHARMS to BET. They liked it but decided to give it a pass. We also submitted a fully scripted pilot, THE TWO ESSENCES to Will Smith's production company, Overbrook Entertainment in a screenplay competition for their new TV show. Of course, they received thousand of submissions that we did not have a chance. Honestly, I say we produce these babies ourselves!
We are setting the funding goal on Indiegogo for $75,000. $5,285 goes to Indiegogo and Paypal for fees. We hope to surpass $100,000, which will gives us the capacity to produce all four production quality films: THE TWO ESSENCES, KAOMI'S THREE CHARMS, CLEOPATRA'S DESIRES and especially our current film, THE SHATTERED MIND. This is the only way our audiences can thrive. More contents will be created and broadcasted, and more jobs will be created for deaf and hard-of-hearing talents of color.

In 1991, while I was attending NYU studying film, I produced my first short film, CUTTING THE EDGE OF A FREE BIRD about a black deaf mother-daughter relationship. I received support from Oprah Winfrey, Miramax Films, Bill Cosby, and the Hudlin brothers for this film. It won several awards.
RELEASED IN 1993
Since then, I've written and produced other films. But something bothers me. I cannot help but notice the lack of visibility of black deaf people and actors of color in film and TV. It became my passion to focus on producing more films about my people. We need to bring the black deaf experience to the mainstream.
In 2003, I wrote, produced and directed my first indie guerrilla style feature film, IF YOU COULD HEAR MY OWN TUNE. I am proud of the work because it is the first ever feature film about black deaf culture. Help me to break new ground in film about black deaf culture.
Read review by Film Threat. " Indeed, it is startling to see a new drama with a deaf central character (Children of a Lesser God came out nearly a quarter-century ago) and it is equally rare to find someone other than Tyler Perry making a contemporary film with African Americans as the romantic leads."
RELEASED IN 2011 (SELECT THIS PERK $25 AND GET A DVD COPY!)
