Why We Need Your Help
The Social Studio’s existing shop is falling apart and we need your generosity and support to bring it back to life! For three years, The Social Studio has run a shop, café, fashion school, hospitality training and much-needed social support (legal advice, counselling, tutoring and even driving lessons!) for young people from the refugee community in Melbourne, Australia. We champion diversity, community, education, sustainability, design and ethical business practices. We design and manufacture on site our own The Social Studio fashion label: high quality garments using hand-dyeing and finishing techniques. All our garments are ethically made using only reclaimed and up-cycled materials gathered from the local fashion industry: an ethos and practice of ‘remixed design’ that turns leftovers (trash) into contemporary collections (treasure). In all we do, we create professional development and opportunity – not charity – for young members of the community who are most in need of a voice, mode of expression and agency.
We are as busy as ever, but our three year-old store can no longer keep up with the pace! As a non-profit social enterprise, our education and social programs are largely funded by philanthropic grants and donations, and our shop and café run on a shoe-string budget. These funds and grants come with strict rules about what can and cannot be funded - and we can’t get support for building, renovation, maintenance and capital works.
$16,500 will enable us to do a basic upgrade of the shop, including a new retail system, painting walls, sealing floors, repairing broken furniture and installing new lights. Ideally we would like to raise $20,000 so we can build new change-rooms and a retail counter, implement a new storage system for the fashion school and install signage for the shop and café to ensure we keep growing our community for many many more years to come.
Many people have got on board so far and are helping pro-bono or at a heavily discounted rate, including;
- Light Project has amazingly donated thousands of dollars worth of beautful architectural lighting for free
- Assemble Projects have developed the design and helped with the campaign for free (you can see a story about us in their publication Assemble Papers)
- Mr Altmepann, a local wood-turner, has turned 100 pieces of dowel
- Dulux has donated paint for the walls and ceiling
- Rotary have offered builders and carpenters for our working bee
Now, with your collective support and generosity, we need to raise the bare minimum to breath new life into our retail space and allow our social enterprise to continue to thrive and grow!
