WHO/WHAT IS EROS?
EROS is celebrating it’s 21st year as a community space and center for safe sex in the Castro. The vision 21 years ago was to create a safe place for safe sex exploration, and a gathering space to socialize with diverse people in a sexual space, much like the baths had provided. EROS has provided space to community groups, free of charge, and opened their lounge to special events, fundraisers and open mics, like Smegma, Retool & Grind, and most recently K’vetch. The art gallery has showcased new and established artists from the region. The community classroom is home to community groups, Naked Men's Yoga, Naked Men's Sketch Group, Tai Chi, SF Ring and tm4m.org and homobiles meetings.
Queer San Francisco has been hit hard the last couple of years. Many of our institutions and spaces have been lost or threatened. Five gay bars have closed, New Leaf Services closed, Lyon Martin Clinic nearly closed, Wicked Grounds Coffee house closed to restructure. There is a residential building boom in our neighborhood, meaning less parking during construction (and less customers) but also means thousands of new neighbors within walking distance when construction is done.
The recession has been difficult for many of our institutions, and EROS is no different. But besides the recession, EROS experienced two break ins which set our movie production back, and it took over a year to replace the stolen electronics. We have survived and even been selected Best Sex Club by the SF Bay Guardian’s reader poll for the last 5 years. Rising insurance costs, minimum wage and rent have put us behind on obligations to the landlord. This year, we are tightening our belt and trying to find new value for our customers. This campaign is designed to meet our financial obligations so we can keep our queer staff of 12 guys employed, and keep our massage studio’s ability to reach an underserved part of our community. The campaign will also allow us to consolidate our two locker rooms, create a fitness room and provide more secure lockers.
EROS has a reputation for innovative safe sex practices , offering unlimited lube with condoms, and being a place for men (18+) of all shapes, colors, and sizes. In recent years, EROS has been a staunch advocate for welcoming trans men into gay male spaces. First with its employment policies, its ID procedures and establishing T-Wood Pictures, the only gay FTM DVD production company. T-Wood Pictures led EROS to also broaden their community support in the sex positive community, leather community and the trans community.
Help us keep EROS an active part of San Francisco’s gay community and strengthen true San Francisco values.
