My mother lost many of her relatives under the hands of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, among them were her parents. Once the war was over, her uncle roamed from village to village searching for her and surviving children in the family. Despite being poor, he still managed to raise all of them as his own and gave them everything he had in honor of his brother (my grandfather) who has always supported him when growing up.
What We Need & What You Get
Tickets to Cambodia are mad expensive! According to my search on Kayak.com, the cheapest tickets to Cambodia are $3993 CAD (for 2), while the ones I would want to book for my parents (mainly operated by Air Canada to make navigating easier for them) cost $4600 CAD.
I come to you asking for $6000 (Indiegogo fees + transfer fees included in the goal). The remain will be given directly to my grand-uncle and family. Seeing how he was told this past month he has 3 months to live, I'm hoping of sending my parents off to Cambodia ASAP in November.
In exchange, I will offer personalized thank you messages, updates and pictures from Cambodia, special thanks in my exclusive Hall of Fame page, personalized illustrations, entries to my fundraising party and more! If you're in the city of Montreal, you will get special treats!
I enjoy illustrating people, as one of the perks, I will draw you from your favourite picture and style it as I feel is fitting. Here's a sample of my work:
Fund Goal Breakdowns
Additionally, since this is a surprise for them, should I reach my goal of $6000, I will take my parents out for dinner and film their reactions as I announce the great news :)
- If ever I don't reach my goal, all funds will go directly to my mom's uncle/adoptive-father and family to cover medical costs.
- Should the fundraiser exceed the goal and reach $8000, I would like to use the extra funds and go to Cambodia with them.
- Should it be somewhere between $6000 and $8000, I will send the extras to my granduncle and family in Cambodia to cover medical costs and cost of living.
- Should this fundraiser reach $10 000, I will fly to Cambodia with my parents, cover medical costs and cost of living for my granduncle and family.
This is very personal to me and the first time my family's struggle is being heard.
As mentioned previously, I regret not being able to send my father to Cambodia to see his parents one last time before they passed away. I was young and just started working. While I have a good chunk of experience banked in now, I get by just enough financially while supporting my parents.
I have always felt like I don't give enough back to my parents even though they make me feel otherwise. This is my time to give them back what they've been missing.
