On August 20th, 2012 Mya Brandt (at 21 months old) was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer called Desmoplastic Medulloblastoma. Mya underwent major brain surgery on August 15th to remove a large tumor attached to her cerebellum at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
Mya's surgery was successful resulting in complete removal of the tumor, but as with any brain cancer there are always microscopic cancer cells that can only be treated with chemotherapy. In her case the intensive chemotherapy necessary will have to be strong doses and she will have to endure them every other week for a minimum of 6 months. She will also have periodic MRI's done on her brain to make sure there is no sign of a tumor growing back and spinal taps to make sure the cancer hasn't spread into her spinal fluid.
Mya will also be starting physical therapy to learn how to walk since the tumor attached to her cerebellum (which controls balance) had prevented her from learning to do so. Finances have become tighter since her Mommy is unable to continue working while caring for her and taking the frequent trips an hour north to Doernbecher. Daddy is doing his best to juggle his busy work schedule and be there to support his wife and daughter emotionally while helping with Mya's care as well.
Our family is now focused on Mya's treatment and the journey ahead. There is nothing more frightening to a parent than the threat of losing a child so please pray for her complete healing and recovery from this scary cancer. Your financial contribution in any amount is appreciated more than you'll know. Thank you!
It is unknown what the total cost of this process will be. These are the known costs at this point:
- At least $6000 per calendar year for medical costs (in 2012 and 2013)
- Ambulance fees not covered by insurance
- Gas expenses for routine drives to Portland
You can donate any amount of money you want. If you donate at least $20, you have the option of getting a Mya bracelet and bookmark.
The great part about donating is that all excess money will be given to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. This hospital has an amazing staff and they can always use additional funds.
Your support means a lot to our family. Mya has a lot of people helping her get through this really tough time, and any additional help is much appreciated.

If you can't donate money, that's fine! Let people know about what Mya's going through and keep her in your prayers. Thank you!
