Hello, my name is Marc With a C. I'm a singer/songwriter/fine purveyor of catchy pop tunes in Orlando, FL.
In order to better serve you as an entertainer and recording artist, I took it upon myself to ask a series of "market research" questions on various social media networks as an experiment in the limits of "crowdsourcing". I’d then let the results influence the direction of the songs on my new record, Popular Music. Some took the queries seriously, others took part in a pastime known as “trolling”. I made no distinction between the two types of responses, and now I'm happy to report the following: as you, the listener, have already said that these are things you would enjoy, I feel confident in saying that Popular Music is the best record that you and I have ever made together.
WHAT I NEED THE MONEY FOR:
The album is recorded and ready to be enjoyed by you. I simply need your help to produce the physical products in the proper manner. You see, if you can imagine it, this one relies even more heavily on the experience of holding an actual album than my last few releases, be it reading the liner notes and following along with the enclosed market research, or simply pulling the colored vinyl out of it's sleeve for the first time. It's an experience, for sure. One unlike any other I've ever produced. And the songs are pretty good, too!
But unfortunately, pressing even limited quantities of vinyl just isn't cheap. Neither is pressing CD's or hiring artists to make these things look nice. And don't even get me started on how much it costs to ship a few hundred vinyl records from the plant to my house. That's when I thought to myself "Hey! Why limit the crowdsourcing experiment to the contents of the album?", and here we are. But really, this is being treated more like a pre-order than anything else, but with your help, the album can come out as soon as possible. If this campaign is successful, I hope to have the albums in your hands and ear canals by the end of February 2013!
The amount of money I'm trying to raise will pay for a limited run of 250 vinyl copies of Popular Music, a small amount of CD's for those that want to experience it that way, and also cover a portion of the shipping to get these things out to you. Most of the bonuses are coming out of my own pocket. No skimping here, my friends.
WHAT YOU GET IN RETURN
Check it out. Even at the lowest level of monetary support, you'll be offered the chance to enjoy a digital copy of Popular Music before the general public hears it. Plus, every other day - give or take - I'll be posting updates of the daily video diaries I kept while recording the album at my house. You'll see me struggling to keep my sanity in check, plus you'll get an idea of just how much work it takes to be a DIY recording artist in 2012. You'll even get some short clips of me recording the album, which I've never done before. These are exclusive to the backers of this project, and will disappear shortly after this campaign is over. You'll also be privy to special bonus recordings that won't be available elsewhere along the way. Ask any of the backers of the successful Normal Bias Kickstarter campaign I did last year: I'm pretty generous with unannounced goodies.
But besides those things, at various levels of support, you'll get the chance to have:
- an exclusive companion CD of outtakes, covers and compilation appearances
- a fan made DVD bootleg of a 2012 Marc With a C concert that I liked enough to replicate, though I had no involvement in the production
- another exclusive CD full of the working demos for the Popular Music album, some differing greatly from their final form
- a 20-minute Skype call where I will play any of my original songs (that I can remember) for you personally. It's a private show!
- the entire Marc With a C vinyl catalog (Motherfuckers Be Bullshittin', Pop! Pop! Pop!, Normal Bias, RetroLowFi)
- a personalized ringtone or outgoing voicemail message that I'll write and sing just for you
- your name listed in the credits of Popular Music
- a cover song of your choice recorded by me
- an original song written about a topic of your choice
- the snare from my drum kit that I've used since 2009
- the keyboard I've used on albums since 2005
Every time we reach another $500 in pledges, I'll let you hear a tune from the album early, plus an extra b-side culled from the aforementioned bonuses! (As a matter of fact, some are already posted here!)
All that, plus... well, I don't mind telling you that I believe that Popular Music is the best record that I've ever made. I hope you'll like it, too.
Please help if you can, even if "help" simply means reposting this on all of your various social media networks and telling all of your friends about it. This album cannot be popular until you decide it is.
Love on ya,
