Help support this rising artist: Every penny counts!
Mexican-American artist Rigoberto A. Gonzalez has the opportunity to exhibit his powerful paintings about the drug wars across the Texas-Mexico border in the heart of Houston, which is the fourth largest city in America. In order to make this powerful exhibition happen, his paintings need to be trucked approximately 792 miles from Las Cruces, New Mexico. It will take $2,000 in gas, drivers and insurance to move the work for an exhibition at the Art League Houston opening on March 9. If you can help get the work here, the space is available and the media is interested! Let the people of Houston see this work for the first time, hear the story it tells and reconsider the power of art to address the most difficult of issues.
About the paintings
created the paintings in Roswell, New Mexico, and was
inspired by the violent confrontations between drug cartels, Mexican federal
troops, and people involved in illegal immigration in his home town of Reynosa;
a border city in the northern part of Mexico.
The artist paints in a Baroque-style found in the 17th century paintings by artist such as Caravaggio and Jusepe de Ribera. This style often incorporates storytelling as away to depict great historical dramas, with rich colors, and symbolism.
Rigoberto brings an additional voice to this story with a reference to the rich tradition of storytelling by placing the portraits of two musicians into his paintings. The musicians are playing songs known as a corridos, which are a narrative tradition in northern Mexico and usually express unpleasant stories about oppression and violence. Rigoberto sees his paintings as contemporary visual corridos, which are not made up of rhyme and verse, but instead of paint and movement.
Rigoberto's paintings will highlight the rich historical tradition of artists who express violence through the beauty of painting as a way of bringing difficult issues into peoples lives like artists such artists like Caravaggio and Goya.
Rigoberto’s paintings will offer the Houston community an artistic snapshot of what is happening on the order side of the border and express a voice for the people who are affected.
The work will motivate the community to raise important questions about what is exactly happening on the border, and why artists throughout history have chosen to explore contemporary issues within their culture. These questions and many more will be explored and talked about in panel discussions at Art League Houston and Talento Bilingüe de Houtson in Houston.
Rigaberto’s work will highlight the importance of art-making as a meaningfully tool to connect to, view, evaluate and understand the world. Rigoberto will take part in a unique painting demonstration at Art League, where he will reveal the methods of his painting process.
