It Hurts To Win is a feature length documentary directed by Michael Abelson and Brandon Lavoie, which follows the Boston University wrestling team throughout its final season of competition. After being unexpectedly cut at the end of the 2012-2013 season, the Terriers were given one final year to compete and represent the university.
Why Was the Program Cut?
After the initial announcement that the program would be terminated, the school’s administration stated that the decision was made after many hours of deliberation and that they took into consideration: overall budgetary constraints, nationwide shifts in conference affiliation, and the team’s performance over the last two decades.
The Story and its Goal
Our goal is that the audience will leave this film with a better understanding of who is affected when a collegiate athletics program is cut, and the emotional toll it takes on all of the individuals involved. Especially with a sport like wrestling, the loss of a program is much more than a small brief in the sports section; it’s the loss of a passion. It is also our hope to convey that at the base of everything, this is an emotional story of loss, brotherhood, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
What We've Done So Far
Since October, we have been able to successfully make it through roughly 70 percent of our principal photography, and we plan on wrapping production by the beginning of April, 2014. The images we've captured look amazing and really convey the team’s story of brotherhood, adversity, and triumph in a unique and emotionally connective way. Here is the film's official website: www.ithurtstowin.com
Our Boston-based editor, Brady Darragh, has begun the process of transcoding and sorting through the hours upon hours of footage we've shot in order to start constructing a rough storyline for the film. In documentary film especially, editing is where the film really begins to find its structure. Check out Brady’s website and resume here: http://www.bradydarragh.com/
We are also currently working with Fernando Martinez, a New York based composer, to create an original score for the film. He wrote and recorded the music for the video above, and we're very excited to be working with him to create something that sounds beautiful and compliments our footage.
Why We Need Your Help
Through our own means, the initial fundraiser back in September, and a few outside donations, we have been able to completely fund the productions stages of this film. We've managed to keep the production of this film completely independent, which allows us to maintain creative control over its final cut. However, in order to make sure this story is told exactly the way we want it to be, and the way that it deserves to be, we still need to pay for some things.
Here’s what we need:
Studio time for Fernando to record the score
A sound mix for the completed film
Color grading and correction (to ensure that the film is as aesthetically pleasing as possible)
Errors and Omissions Insurance (protects any film that’s ultimately seeking distribution)
Licensing Fees (to protect the films integrity)
A professional website for the film (see link to our temporary site above)
Promotional and marketing materials (to spread the word about It Hurts To Win)
Film festival entry fees for the film
If (When) We Reach Our Goal
When we reach our goal, like the driven athletes in this story, we’re going to set a new one. We will strive towards delivering this film in the most professional and compelling manner possible.
Other Ways You Can Help
We understand that some people may not be able to contribute financially. Another way you can help us make this project a reality is to spread the word. Word of mouth has been a powerful tool for us throughout this process, and when supplemented by the sharing power of the Internet’s social media… there are no limits for this campaign. Whether you are contributing financially or not, please share this link with everyone you know. Just like every dollar counts, so does every social media share.
What Your Donation Gets You
Here are some pictures of what your donations can get you. Since this fundraiser will end 60 days from now, we can guarantee the delivery of all t-shirts, headbands, and stickers by May 2014.
This is a 1st and limited edition t-shirt. Once we have sold out of this edition, we will begin selling the 2nd edition t-shirts. (ALL T-SHIRTS ARE MADE OF PRESHRUNK COTTON AND COME IN: M, L, XL)
You will receive 4 Stickers per order. Stickers are 4.5 x 2.7 inches.
How Far We've Come
This video below was the video we shot for our first Indiegogo campaign. We shot it on a Nikon that only shot in standard resolution. Through your help and our initial campaign, we've come a long way. Take at our humble beginnings:
(Disclaimer: Michael and Brandon are in no way affiliated with Boston University, Boston University Athletics, or Boston University Wrestling. The money we raise for this will strictly go towards finishing the project. We are simply trying to tell this story as well as we possibly can for the team, for the coaches, and ultimately, for everyone who wants to listen.)
