Our Campaign is for our son Ty, he's a 16 year old cancer survivor. After 10 months of high dose chemo therapy and a surgery, our son became an above knee amputee due to bone cancer in his right tibia. Though he won't always be a cancer patient, he will always be an amputee.
We have been blessed with having decent health insurance due to my husband being active duty and serving in the US Air Force for 21 years. Now retired and not able to find a job and 70% disabled, it's becoming harder for us to afford to pay out of pocket cost for new prosthetic legs as Ty continues to grow.
Right now Ty is learning to play Ice Hockey and he wants to play standing up, not in a sled. We just found out that due to the new health care laws our insurance provider will loose it's contract at the end of the month, which means our out of pocket cost for Prosthetics will skyrocket. Our Co-Pays could go from 12 dollars a visit to 300. Ty has to have many fittings with his Prosthetist in order to have a leg that will allow him to be independent.
For Ty, being able to play Ice Hockey like everyone else is more than just being normal, it will give him a sense of independence that a person deserves, he will no longer have to go sit on the bleachers with friends during stick time and watch, he will be able to suit up and play the game he has come to love so much.
We have set the goal to what we are expected to pay for just this one leg, anything that exceeds the goal will be set aside for a fund for Ty's future legs and medical cost.
Ty has been cancer free for almost 3.5 years, though he will continue to have more scans in the next 2 years to make sure he continues to stay cancer free, his next set of scans will be September 11, 2012, which will be exactly 4 years to the day that he was diagnosed. We know there are great things in Ty's future and we are praying that Ice Hockey is one of them.
We know were fortunate to have all we have, and it's hard to ask for this help, but our faith in people has grown by leaps and bounds since he was diagnosed.
Thank you in advanced for any help you can give
