8/25 - Update 4: Thank you!
I can't thank you enough. Not only have we found Ken a surgeon, but the surgeon has agreed to do the surgery for a fraction of the original cost. We have raised $47,600 total now, enough to cover the surgery, any and all pre and post op medical expenses, all medication Ken will need for the foreseeable future, and there might even be some left over to go to Reglue.
I can't stress enough how thankful I am to everyone who has helped. The outpouring of support is amazing. You are all wonderful people. :)
8/23 - Update 3: We still need you!
$31,400 is our current total, including non-IndieGoGo contributions. The community has come out in full force to meet this challenge, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for everything! Now we're in our last 4 days of this campaign, and we still need your help. The cost just to book the OR for Ken's surgery is $50,000, and that doesn't include the surgery itself, nor any post-op medical expenses. This means we still need to get this out in front of a broader audience.
What can you do to help? Share this campaign, along with a message about why people should support it. Ken is a real-life hero to thousands of kids in the Austin, TX area, and truly needs the help to get through this. Keep this campaign alive, and let's show Ken how much he means to the world. :)
8/20 - Update 2: We're half way!
Though the IndieGoGo total says we are quite a bit less, there was a massive influx of donations through my website today. We are currently sitting at around $25,000, thanks to the help and generosity of the Linux community and all of our generous donors. We can't stop now! Keep pushing, and we can nail this goal in record time!
Keep sharing, keep caring, and get this in front of everyone you can. We can make a real difference!
8/17 - Update: Keep up the Great Work!
Thanks to an enormous outpouring of support, we've met our initial goal of $5,000 within 24 hours! Thank you to all who have donated so far. The need is far from met, however: just reserving the operating room for Ken's surgery costs a staggering $50,000. Please, help us keep a good thing going...share this page, push it out to social networks, IRC and blogs, and drive traffic so we can keep Ken on the road to recovery.
Repay a Legacy of Kindness with a Token of Support
Ken Starks has helped a lot of people. He's personally placed a lot of computers in homes that couldn't otherwise afford them. Now he needs our help - not to build more computers or train more people or spread more free-software love, but to stay alive.
Ken has had more than his share of health problems. No matter what, he has pressed on with his singular mission to help people. Hundreds a year, every day, with help from only a few volunteers and advisers. But cancer has him up against the ropes this time.
Please donate if you can, and please pass this post along to your circles, friends and followers. The more eyes that are on Ken right now, the more people will realize what a blessing he is to so many, and how deserving he is of help that he will surely pay forward.
We Can Do It!
IndieGoGo has seen some amazingly successful campaigns. Recently, this community raised over $700,000 for a harassment victim, and has seen many more successful campaigns to help fund medical expenses just like Ken's.
When someone dedicates their life to helping others as Ken Starks has - and they press on doing so in the face of job losses, divorces, health problems, family emergencies and more - they certainly deserve to have a portion of this good well reflected back to them.
We thank you for your donation, and for spreading the word about this effort to save the life of one of the most generous, selfless, caring individuals the technology world is priveliged to count among its ranks.
