Michael McMeel, former Drummer of the mega group, Three Dog Night, started The Awareness Foundation/Inner City Slickers (ICS) in 1992 after the Los Angeles riots. McMeel walked the streets of South Central, East LA, Compton and Korea Town looking for answers and found some of them in Community Centers and Churches – any place that he could find kids that needed help. After years of developing the ICS program, his reach to children has grown leaps and bounds.
ICS serves at-risk children, autistic, challenged and disadvantaged youth. Across America and we partner with family Ranch Partners delivering life changing lessons to our young kids. Our Character and Integrity building exercises along with the Magic of our Horses and volunteers provide life-changing and healing experiences these kids so desperately need.
Mainly a self-funded organization for 21 years, ICS is now taking its leap into fundraising with the help of horse lovers, ranchers, equine vendors and the general public. Our vision and goal is to raise funds so we can meet the demand to have the ICS program at ranches in 50 major U.S. cities.
What We Do
With the Magic of horses and our expert volunteers, our kids are transformed. They change right in front of your eyes. They forget about color, peer pressures and their own challenges and they learn to concentrate on what’s in front of them — a magnificent animal! These horses are able to live purposeful lives and their healing is inherent in the love these kids give back!
There is something that happens, a magical thing, when a child and a horse meet for the very first time. As they develop a relationship and sense of trust, you find that both of their lives are being touched in a unique and profound way. There is a sense of peace, balance, and oneness, that only could happen between the meeting of these two beings –-helping each other learn the lessons of life.
Of huge importance after our Slickers have completed the program is ICS’ continued contact with them. We believe experiences at the Slicker event combined with our follow-up and contact provides a much better opportunity for them to become responsible, caring citizens. And that’s what Inner City Slickers is all about…Making a Difference in the lives of Children, One Child at a Time.
Our vision is to help our young people become responsible citizens, compassionate leaders and the dream-builders of tomorrow. In order to accomplish its national goals, The Awareness Foundation/ICS works with city councils and governments, community foundations, community colleges, local businesses and non-profit groups (including other at-risk youth programs) to energize communities around the above objectives and principals. The result will be to expand opportunities for local youth and communities at large.
Your donation today, saves lives tomorrow. Our goal is to ensure that every major city has an ICS Ranch Partner & Events for these children. No Foundation member receives a salary for our efforts. Your donation goes directly towards event costs and every $100 helps ensure two more children get a chance to change their lives. We appreciate your act of kindness and hope you will enjoy our ICS “thank you” Perks. Check them out on our campaign page and click the donate button now.
