A story of millions ignoredJoey Tuan had just graduated from UC Berkeley's undergraduate business school and was working as a consultant in San Francisco. During a 17-mile hike at Yosemite, he got full-blown flu symptoms, except they didn't go away.
Doctors were baffled, so they diagnosed him with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, then POTS, then Lyme Disease. He spent 5 years jumping from one patient forum to another and $200k trying different treatments, and he lamented that there wasn't a one-stop shop for the millions with multiple diagnoses. Ultimately it was only the sheer luck of hearing about a treatment from another patient that led to improvement.
With his improved health, he set two goals: help chronically-ill patients share treatment experiences in one centralized place, and turn all these patients' experiences into research studies.
Matching patients to help them shareJoey and cofounders Cari Allshouse and Beth Mazur turned this vision into HealClick, a website that uses patient-matching to make sense of all the treatment reviews shared online.
First, patients use our tracking system to share basic biographical info, conditions, symptom ratings, and treatment ratings. Then we match them up by how much they have in common! (Read more about Patient-Matching) Now they can see treatment reviews from their best patient matches.
All this data will be used for medical research after we make it anonymous. (See How we-identify data)
Why We Need Funding
We've built a foundation for patients to connect and share with each other, but we need your help to reach our potential. If we meet our goal, we can turn our raw data into real research studies.
#1 : Build mobile tracking
Right now we're not capturing how patients' conditions change on a day-to-day basis, so we're missing the data that researchers tell us they need the most. With your help, we can build a mobile app which asks patients daily well-being and pain levels, and encourage them to let us know if symptoms, treatments, or anything else changed.
#2 : Add standardized labs and symptoms
#3 : Keep patients safe and engagedMost importantly, we need to provide a safe and fun user experience for patients. With your help, we can upgrade to HIPAA-compliant data security and optimize performance to keep our site humming as our community increases in size. We're only as valuable as long as our users stick around, so we'll continue building a warm, social, and fun experience by rewarding active members and improving our UI design.
Help start a patient revolutionWith your help, we can both create a 'Yelp' for medical treatments and also turn these patient experiences into desperately needed research.

1. Are you a non-profit or a for-profit?
We are a for-profit business as we believe this gives our personnel the best opportunity to help patients in the long run. We will keep membership free forever. Our business philosophy is that every cent we make comes from helping our patients. Learn more at Profit With Compassion.
2. Are you a public or private website?
We take pride in protecting patient privacy. We may consider making posts (topics and treatment reviews) public so new patients can find us from search engines, but they will never include user profiles, usernames, and user photos.
3. Can doctors or researchers join?
We're trying to foster a patient-centered environment so patients will feel comfortable sharing health treatment experiences. To preserve this environment, we allow physicians and researchers on an invite-only basis for scientific feedback.
