Raised into a community of artisans in rural North Carolina, nine year old Harold has an active and dangerous imagination. When his adopted mother, Avery, is expecting her first biological child, Harold feverishly builds a wooden tower to the sky to intercept his unborn baby brother.
This live-action short film is a balancing act between artistic and technical, simple and complex, fantasy and reality. The construction of the tower, a boy’s imagination, and the relationship between mother and child are the foundations of the film.

Why are you making this into a short film?
We deeply value film as an art form. Movies have an ability to assault our entire being. They can wake us up, get us thinking, and tap into our most primal emotions. As filmmakers if we can capture the magic in just the right way, we’re able to connect with the audience and create a meaningful impact on their lives. But of above all, it boils down to having a fantastic story to tell. To us, HARBINGER is that kind of story.
The fact that HARBINGER is a homegrown narrative makes it all the more appealing. We want to elevate local interest in Raleigh and North Carolina as a place to make significant professionals films. As alumni of NC State University we strive to raise the bar for the quality of work that’s possible in this community, and to inspire others to invest in the future of filmmaking here at home.
Why should I give you my money?
HARBINGER has the potential to be visually striking and breathtaking, but not without the combined effort of many talented people and resources. We need a lot of skilled hands to build a world that is visually rich and authentic. And we need additional funding in order to do that. With your help, we can fully realize this story into a living, breathing tale that is both deep and heartwarming.
We aren’t starting from scratch though:
- (1) Drawbridge owns the RED Epic and RED Scarlet. We also have lighting, sound, and camera equipment. And we have the latest post-production technology.
- (2) Our crew is committed to the project and will work for reduced rates.
- (3) Our script is in its final stages, and was written in house without additional cost.
- (4) Our composers are dedicated and ready. Raleigh's post-rock powerhouse: Goodbye, Titan
- (5) We have the support of NC State students, alumni, & staff who are ready to pitch in.
What will my money go towards?
We are running a marathon with this film, and it’s going to be separated into 2 phases of funding.
- (1) Start-up Phase 1 funds will apply to: location fees, costumes, sets, graphic work, props, construction, casting, essential crew, concepting, storyboarding, pre-visualization, stunts/rigging, pyrotechnics, additional high-end equipment rentals, and hidden costs (business expenses, permits, contracts, legal).
- (2) Finishing Phase 2 will apply to: Additional cast and crew rates, meals and craft services, miscellaneous gear/replacements, transportation costs, and hidden costs (accidents, First Aid, weather, delays).
We plan to be as professional and transparent as possible, though it’s too early in the process to draw up a final budget. That being said, our full budget or what we estimate the costs to be is $23,500.
We’re starting Phase 1 asking for $14,700, a little more than 60% of the total.
One variable cost that depends on the crowdfunding support: IndieGoGo takes 4% if our campaign is met, and 9% if it isn’t!
If we raise enough, we can afford to pay the cast and crew for their involvement. If we come in under our goal, then we’ll be forced to adapt and look at more stripped-down guerrilla approaches.
The advantage to supporting Drawbridge Media, is that we have half of what we need already. Our RED cameras, equipment, and post-production facilities are on par with the technology available in Hollywood. None of the funding is going into our pockets, but will be distributed out into the local economy. We have the tools we need to make this happen, and now it comes down to having the additional resources to surround ourselves with the best team possible.
What is your timeline for HARBINGER?
Although our production/shooting timeline is still in development, we would like you to know the start dates, and when we expect to accomplish our goals.
Our IndieGoGo funding phase start dates are as follows:
- Phase 1 (2/1/13)
- Phase 2 (Spring/Summer)
Shooting is scheduled to begin in April-May 2013.
Technology has allowed our society to become hyper-connected; if you were looking for a new immersive, artistic involvement, you’ve found it.
Updates will be frequent so you can watch HARBINGER unfold, as we finalize the look of the film and get the production rolling:
- Stay tuned for new artwork and videos every week!
- We’ll also be updating with new exciting perks as we get closer to the deadline!
- So check back with us often!
When will I get my perk?
We’ll be sure to update you as we progress, and your perks will not fall by the wayside. We would like to send out all of the perks at once. However, some of them are time and location specific. Look for emails from us when each campaign ends; we’ll let you know when to expect yours. At the latest you’ll get after post-production.
I'm sold! ...But I can't spare any money.
We completely understand, and thank you! But you can help without donating money: spread the word, invite friends to this website, generate some interest and excitement, share on social networking sites, anything! And that will ensure that you’ll still get to watch the film come together.
We’ve had a lot of help already on the project, and we’d like to acknowledge:
