THE FILM

Mentally and physically scarred by his time served in Iraq and Afghanistan, Sgt. Cole Lewis finds humanity, compassion and friendship in the psychiatric ward of a remote Veterans Hospital.  Through humor and pathos, Lewis becomes a ray of hope, helping the men find a way to combat their post-war grief.  However, just as their luck starts to change, Lewis faces his fiercest battle yet the one against himself.

Evoking comparisons to such ground breaking films as One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Coming Home, HAPPY NEW YEAR comes at an incredibly important time, as the military is, finally, taking the necessary steps to acknowledge the severity of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in combat veterans.  The Academy Award success of The Hurt Locker last year demonstrated that audiences are ready for powerful and intelligent films relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  HAPPY NEW YEAR is poised to make a major impact at theaters near you in 2011.  However, before we can do that

WE NEED YOUR HELP

An independently produced feature film, HAPPY NEW YEAR was shot on location at the Bronx Psychiatric Center. Production wrapped in early 2010 and we recently completed post-production services in October 2010.  Now we are embarking upon the critical stage of reaching our audience.  We'll achieve this by first launching at premiere film festivals such as Berlin, SXSW, and/or Cannes in early 2011. However, due to the highly competitive nature of independent film, getting into a top film festival is merely the first step in securing a distribution deal.  We are going to implement an aggressive sales/marketing campaign to ensure that we get the attention of key distributors and get HAPPY NEW YEAR into theaters as soon as possible.

To do so, we need to raise at least $25,000 by February 15th.  Your donations will go to materials and labor including:  top-tier publicity, submission fees, artwork, posters, and festival travel and accommodations.

You can contribute by clicking the links on the right side of this page. Every little bit helps, and, like PBS, we offer a number of great gifts and incentives.  And please SPREAD THE WORD - email your family and friends links to this site and our website www.hnyfilm.com, post on Facebook and Twitter and talk to people the old-fashioned way about HAPPY NEW YEAR.  This film was made by a team of incredibly talented, fearless and dedicated individuals, but YOU can help us bring this important film to the world.

MORE ABOUT HAPPY NEW YEAR

Award-winning writer/director K. LORREL MANNING (Happy New Year short film, Columbia University, MFA in Directing) expertly directs an accomplished, multi-ethnic cast, led by emerging star MICHAEL CUOMO (Happy New Year short film, Bandslam), who delivers a haunting performance as "Lewis." Hollywood veteran IAIN SMITH (A-Team; Wanted; Children of Men) serves as the films Executive Producer, overseeing sales and distribution. Academy Award-winning SOOPUM SOHN (Island to Island) is the Cinematograher, creating a "fly-on-the-wall" experience that is painfully intimate. The film also features breakout performances from JD WILLIAMS ("The Wire," "Oz") as "Jerome" and MONIQUE GABRIELA CURNEN (The Dark Knight, Half Nelson, "Lie To Me") as "Lisa". The supporting cast shines with stellar performances from JOSE YENQUE (Traffic, Beginners), WILMER CALDERON (Annapolis, Good Time Max), (WILL ROGERS ("Gossip Girl," "Law & Order"), DAVID FONTENO ("The Good Wife"), (NOAH MILLS (Sex & the City 2), JOHN LEIGHTON (Nobodys Fool), FRANK HARTS ("Law & Order") and SETH BARRISH (Margot at the Wedding), with TINA SLOAN (Black Swan, "Guiding Light") and ALAN DALE ("Lost," "The O.C.").

HAPPY NEW YEAR is an incredibly entertaining, funny, yet hard-hitting portrait of the human cost of war, the "living dead," who are not counted among the casualties on the battlefield. It is a universal story focusing on a group of men struggling with life after trauma and has been called "the most powerful portrayal of soldiers returning from this current war to ever hit the screen."
