Help Zimbabwean musician Hamlet Zhou make history and produce the world’s first ever album of Lemba music.
Be a part of recording and celebrating a tradition that has been unknown for centuries.
Hamlet Zhou is a maverick singer-guitarist from Zimbabwe who has worked and toured with some of the country's major bands (including many years with the legendary Andy Brown & the Storm), and has two successful solo albums under his belt. His next album will the the first to explore the culture of his own community, the Lemba people in southern Zimbabwe.
The Lemba people are descended from Yemenite Jews who migrated to Africa centuries ago. In the past they have been quite secretive, and even today their culture remains little-known and somewhat mysterious to outsiders. There have been several books, studies and articles about the Lemba, but there has never been a release of Lemba music, traditional or modern. Hamlet's album will feature his band in Harare as well as traditional master musicians and singers in Lemba villages. It will be an authentic, creative and original exploration of Zimbabwean Lemba culture blended with his own, contemporary compositions.
This will be the first Lemba music album in history, and Hamlet is the only professional musician that has been actively researching it, and is interested in preserving and reinterpreting it.

The money we are raising is to cover the entire process of producing and releasing the album, including travelling to the Lemba villages to record, musicians and studio in Harare, mixing, mastering, designing and and manufacturing the album, filming the entire story and creating online content. By the end of the production process, the album will be available worldwide and the band will be ready to tour.
The Production crew includes:
EUGENE ULMAN- producer / director of Elegwa Music. Eugene has been working as a film-maker and freelance producer around Africa for more than a decade. Check out his his previous album as producer "Mashasha" (www.mashasha.com)

What we all get out of it
This is a project that will be both musically exciting and culturally important. For Hamlet this album will be a culmination of years of research, planning and writing. It will help preserve unique Lemba musical traditions, as well as empower the community and the musicians involved.
In our digital age people have become accustomed to listening to any to music they want for free, and platforms like this are pretty much the only way an independent artist can raise the funds to create innovative, alternative and important work.
Whatever you contribute, you will know that 100% of it what we raise will go directly to producing the album, not to a distributor, retailer or any other middleman.
For our supporters we have various rewards that we hope will bring you value and enjoyment. You can pre-order the album, receive artworks by Lemba artists, get invited to a Lemba village or host Hamlet in your home and have a private show, and there are ways you can get involved and be a part of the project itself.
Of course the amounts and perks are just a guide and are flexible - for example, you might want pre-order multiple copies of the album to give to your friends, or any other combination of the rewards we are offering. You can basically contribute any amount - just contact us first and tell us what you would like, and we'll do our best to accommodate! Our contact emai is firstname.lastname@example.org
You can pay with any credit card or with paypal. If these methods don't work for you, please email us and we'll find another way!
Other Ways You Can Help
Here are some other ways you can help us or even get involved in the project:
- Please forward this link to friends - tweet about it, share on facebook, use the Indiegogo share tools or whatever else you can do to spread the word - even tell people about it in person, without the use of any electronic device or media! [That usually works amazingly.]
- Help us promote this project by writing an article for a publication, website or blog or featuring it on a radio show.
- We welcome all kinds of ideas for collaboration, exchanges and partnerships, as well as in-kind contributions from individuals, organizations and companies, so please contact us with your thoughts!
