HAITI BABI
Our goal is to empower moms in Haiti and keep families together. Haiti Babi creates handmade baby blankets and fair-wage jobs for moms in Haiti, empowering them to provide for their families.
One in ten children in Haiti lives in an orphanage. Many of these children have families, but their families cannot afford them because they cannot find a job. Haiti Babi gives moms jobs making baby blankets, so they can afford to care for their children. Haiti Babi is a hand up, not a handout. When a mom works at Haiti Babi, she doesn’t just earn a paycheck; she also rebuilds her self-esteem, and shows her children that they can break the cycle of poverty. Our moms’ determination is our inspiration.
In just nine months, we’ve prototyped our first products, set up our business in Seattle and our office in Cap Haitien, built our website, hired our first four artisans, gotten interest from numerous retailers, and won two start-up business awards.
We’re almost there. Now we need a kick-start to fulfill three critical next steps:
1. Hire a new manager to oversee operations in Haiti
2. Hire more women in Haiti
3. Produce our first run of 200 blankets for sale in the United States (includes buying a second knitting machine and more yarn)
Blankets
Haiti Babi blankets are handmade by moms in Haiti. The main part of the blanket is made on a hand-knitting machine, the borders are hand-crocheted and the three circles are embroidered.
Haiti Babi blankets come in six sophisticated color options. They are made from all natural 100% cotton so they are super soft for baby and machine washable for you!
It's Better Together
We've partnered with Second Mile Ministries (SMM) as our on-the-ground partner in Haiti. We believe we can all achieve more if we leverage our skills and resources to work together. SMM's goal is to empower moms to care for their children by providing housing, education, and job training to mothers in difficult situations. SMM is run by two rockstars, Jenn and Amy. They are our hands and feet on-the-ground, and are doing amazing work for families in Haiti. Check them out!
