Gallerista and the Future of Online Art Collecting
These days you can go to any one of a number of websites dedicated to finding “the perfect work for you.”
Search by Color. Search by Style. Search by Size. Search by Affordability.
Sounds pretty easy, right? If your carpet is white, and your walls are grey, and couch is ochre, you can quickly be directed to a number of works within your price point at lightning speed.
But what about the Collector on the hunt? What about the Collector who searches endlessly, online and in person, who goes to tiny studios in foreign cities, galleries on winding streets and meticulously follows the blogs of artists and critics who feed their voracious curiosity? What about the Collector’s Collector?
Reframing the Online Art Purchase
Gallerista is a digital platform connecting contemporary artists to potential patrons, collectors and the public at large. The site, galleristachicago.com, is a response to feedback from artists, administrators and collectors alike who are seeking artwork across various mediums, educations and backgrounds. This new platform explores thoughtful and respectful ways to showcase artists and their work, providing profiles to engage and inform collectors, while driving online traffic to artists’ individual websites and the spaces which foster them.
Digitally adapting to the nature of art scenes and an untraditional, multi-faceted market, Gallerista is exploring new channels for artists and audiences to connect. By creating an online space exclusively dedicated to exhibiting artists, fostering community and driving informed consumership, Gallerista aims to promote the ideals of collectorship, reframing the ways in which we purchase art online.
Our Project is Your Project
In 2013, Gallerista will build out its first gallery space which will serve the visual arts community two fold. First, a storefront will give voice to local, independent curators to propose shows and cull talent exhibited online at Gallerista, giving these artists a physical presence in what is largely a digital endeavor. Secondly, the back will serve as a private viewing area, acting as a third-party location where interested collectors will be able to set appointments to view work seen only previously online before purchasing if they so choose.
Remember, one of the best ways in which we can directly affect artists is by facilitating thoughtful programming, developing engaged audiences and following the arc of their artistic careers.
Your Funding Really Counts!
By contributing now, Gallerista will facilitate a street side space for this groundbreaking endeavor, which promises to explore and help shape the ways in which we collect art and interact with the very people responsible for the work we buy, amplifying the voice of the independent artist. Your generous donation goes toward all, but is not limited to the following:
- Rent in a high-traffic, pedestrian area of Chicago
- Infrastructure and build out of the raw space
- Programming expenses
- Curatorial Support and Honorariums
- Receptions and Special Events
- Marketing, Outreach and PR Materials, and more
Gallerista will use any and all funding to reinvest in itself as the needs of its patrons continue to evolve.
As arts patrons continuously seek new artwork and artists to follow, there is no reason why in an age of information we have such difficulty locating practicing artists. With an age of information must also come an age of understanding, followed by thoughtful action.
Gallerista provides collectors with the information they need in order to formulate informed opinions and working knowledge before pursuing the acquisition of an artwork. By learning side by side with Gallerista as their guide, collectors are able to slow down the immediacy of purchase, create lifelong relationships with artists and thereby focus on the heart of the matter: the artwork and the ideas being presented to them.
Be careful what you fund. It may just be coming to a city near you...
By contributing now, you are helping shape the very conversation of how we purchase art online and interact with the very people who produce it. As of now, Chicago is our proving ground. As the project unfolds, we will keep you informed of news, events and updates on our endeavors as we continue to expand and grow.
Thank you in advance for your direct contribution to the arts. We look forward to working with you! Now make some noise for us by sharing the link above!
