About the documentary:
From the Ground Up provides an inspiring look at gardeners in three cities, juxtaposing these modern urban farmers with the original Victory Gardeners who during WWI and WWII grew food in backyards, on balconies, any wherever they could. At their peak, these gardeners yielded 40% of the produce consumed in the US. Today a Sacramento teacher and her young sons “take on City Hall” to fight for their front yard vegetable garden; a team of San Francisco artists planting a modern day Civic Center Victory Garden and redefine the use of urban green space; Puerto Rican migrants in Massachusetts work to elevate their quality of life by growing vegetables in once vacant lots. By creating a documentary and other media with opportunities to participate, From the Ground Up seeks to inspire people to grow a small bit of their own food then share it, creating a tangible way to connect to their local food system, strengthening their communities and economies.
From the Ground Up is nearly complete, the movie is shot and is currently being edited. Now we need funds for archival footage, animations and music. We have a talented and dedicated team of people involved in this project who have been working with us for years and we want to make the best movie possible for them as well as the farmers and gardeners in it.
Director/Producer Kristi Stephens Adams: I have been working in San Francisco’s film and video industry since 1998. I am currently participating the Bay Area Video Coalition Mediamaker Fellowship working on completing From the Ground Up and creating multi-platform media to continue the film’s mission into the future. Prior to that I held a wide spectrum of positions on documentaries, narrative shorts, and feature films, plus television shows and industrial and commercial projects. I have been food gardening in my backyard and in a community garden in San Francisco for over eight years. I have learned how much effort, time, and money it takes to have a successful garden. Through gardening, I have connected with more people in my neighborhood than I would have any other way. I know from experience what the simple pleasure of a few freshly picked berries can mean to someone who is struggling. Cultivating self-reliance can help people move forward with a little more hope and a lot more confidence. While making From the Ground Up I have met amazing people who are changing their communities, one seed at a time. With my experience as a filmmaker and a gardener, I feel compelled to bring these ground-breakers’ stories to the masses.
What We Need:
We are so close, but there are a few things we cannot beg, borrow or barter:
- Research and acquisition of historical Victory Garden footage from the National Archive $7,000.
- Music research and acquisition $3,000.
- Illustrations, graphics and animations $5,000.
Even if we do not meet the $15,000 goal, the movie will get made, it will just take longer and may not be as awesome as we hoped. If we get MORE than $15,000 we will be able to pay people who have so far worked for nothing more than gratitude and produce from my yard.
