BRAD is your average High School student just dreaming of the day that he can pursue his dream to be a filmmaker. Always with a smart phone in his hand, capturing every moment of human interaction. He sees life in all shades and colors; nothing is black and white so he makes sure he films everything to remember those little details.
But with this creativity comes an inwardness that only allows one person to get really close, his best friend ALEJANDRO. ALEJANDRO who is first generation American has his own issues of understanding who he is physically. Their friendship has grown since meeting in the Elementary school lunchroom, realizing and accepting that they are both different from the moment they meet.
SHAWN, a thinly veiled insecure High School student, takes out his insecurities on those students that seem weaker than him – all in the hopes that it will build his own worth as a man. Although Brad experiences some of Shawn’s bullying, Alejandro gets the brunt.
A touching moment between Brad and Alejandro reveals that Alejandro feels he was born the wrong sex. A pivotal secret that Alejandro is very fearful of what would happen if his conservative family were to find out. Alejandro being Brads muse loved being filmed and trusted his secret to one of Brad's smart phone interviews. Shawn being curious what Brad was recording all the time, took it upon himself to steal the smartphone. Now some of the most private videos have fallen into the hands of Shawn, who then uses social media to broadcast the admission to the world. The fear that results from the video leads Alejandro to free himself from the humiliation and fear that results – through suicide.
Because the leaked video that ultimately resulted in the death of Alejandro, Brad feels responsible and this sends him into heavy guilt and thus, he looses focus on everything that he loved about his life – the filming, the laughter, the love of friends. Brad felt he could have saved Alejandro if only given the chance.
As bullies always do, Shawn’s attention turns to HANNAH, an awkward High School student that shared a lot of the qualities seen in Alejandro. Brad sees this abuse and has an opportunity to make it right with Alejandro since Alejandro had befriended Hannah. Shawn’s abuse toward Hannah intensifies until one day Brad attacks Shawn. Brad feels emboldened by his action and Hannah is thankful but Shawn must retaliate, and retaliate intensely.
The retaliation brings a public humiliation that drives Hannah into fear and the ultimate choice, essentially making the same decision as Alejandro. Social media is a powerful tool and fortunately, Brad sees Hannah’s tweets as a call for help. He figures out that Hannah is attempting to kill herself via twitter – at that very moment. Brad rushes over just in time to save her.
As Hannah is taken away to recover, Brad sees that she has made a memorial to Alejandro on her wall. Brad sees the memorial as sign that he must forgive himself as Alejandro would of wanted him to be passionate about life. He is inspired to edit a short film from the hundreds of interviews with Alejandro, including the revelation that he was a woman in a boy’s body; showcasing what a beautiful human soul Alejandro was. The AD teacher is so moved by the piece that it is played on the school’s network which is picked up by Youtube. Brad’s lasting tribute to Alejandro brings the realization that he was everything he could be to Alejandro – a true friend that loved him for him, that Alejandro’s death was not in vain.
