The Columbus Free
Press has been in print for 43 years. We have been unapologetic in
speaking truth to power since the massacre at Kent State. Since then
we have gone on to provide central Ohio with monthly hard hitting
progressive coverage on government corruption, anti-racist struggles,
labour, feminism and the environment. We have never pulled punches,
we have never held back, we have never been forced to retract a
story. We now want to delivery these uncensored stories to more people in a better format.
We have been a critical force in Columbus area progressive politics, supporting every major initiative by the people of Central Ohio since our inception. We have supported ComFest since the beginning. We helped found Community Shares, a major umbrella supporter of progressive non-profits in the Columbus area.
We put a priority on investigative journalism. We uncovered the fraudulent election of 2004 that sent Bush back to Washington. We proved it in 2008 by forcing the deposition of Michael Connell before his untimely death. We did it again in 2012 when we uncovered the Romney family and friend's financial stake in the very machines that critical Ohio votes would be counted on.
We have been on the internet for 18 years. We were one of the first progressive voices to use the internet to reach a non-print audience in a timely fashion. Since our most recent upgrade in 2001, we have published over 5100 news stories and progressive Op-Eds. Our recent coverage of the current NSA scandal brings new revelations, often featuring research independent of mainstream sources, on a near daily basis.
We are proud of ourselves and our achievements. Now we are asking for your help to go that extra mile. The Columbus Free Press will be born again on September 4th as weekly news magazine. We have talented staff and a good community. We need your help to build an internet presence that matches our new print initiative.
Our website reaches thousands of people daily. They come, they read, and they linger longer than on most other comparable sites. We are seeking the capital to offer our web readers even more. This is a capital campaign to build the Columbus Free Press a website that not only deliver the story in a format that the modern reader is used to, but also allow us to self-serve video new features that will add to the overall reach and impact of our investigative journalism.
This in turn will help us finally reach the holy grail of the news industry: The integration of print and internet journalism into a format that is timely, engaging and financially sustainable. That is why we are crowd-sourcing this capital campaign.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 or more to purchase the labor, tools, server space and video equipment to compete directly with the corporate media establishment. We are not seeking operating funds. We are seeking the capital improvements to stop being an underground alternative voice and start being an above ground competitive progressive opposition --- An insurgent progressive media force for the 21st century.
Your donation of $30 or $50 or $100 will get you a book or books full of some of our past writings, our best. These will be signed by the authors and arrive with our love and solidarity. They will also be a reminder to you that you helped us look back on the last 43 years with pride and look forward to the next 43 years with hope.
Thank You for your kind consideration,
The board and staff of the Columbus Free Press
