Hi Everyone,
Although we didn’t hit our fundraising goal, we DID make enough to do one more episode of LAGD (not a whole season) and help about full month’s worth of independent creators with direct, free legal work. Everyone should be extremely proud of your contribution. We’ll be sending you an update about the perks by the end of February.

Also, thank you helping raise awareness about our goal of freeing independent creators from the threats of legal bullies.

Great news!

New Media Rights has gotten a lot of great press on our fundraiser so far [ aol.it/VKv2sj ] . We made the cover of our local San Diego alternative newspaper City Beat last week [ bit.ly/TFHgDY ] , and our copyright reform work was recently covered on Techdirt [ bit.ly/XzIkfa ].

BUT we’re still a few $1,000 from our goal though, AND we have less than 5 DAYS to reach it.

YOU CAN HELP BY:
1. Consider raising your donation up one level. If everyone moved up one level then we’d raise more than $1000 more. Now our $250 level gives you everything, including a copy of Spacechem and Bush League. For everyone who moves up, the Creative Commons Mixtape will also include an original song by ME (Shaun Spalding) in addition to the executive director Art!

2. Sharing a link to our campaign again on your social networks: http://igg.me/p/276926/x/1758982 … Let’s remind everyone we only have 5 days left use this tweet/facebook status…

Nonprofit @newmediarights defends game devs from bogus legal threats. Less than 5 days for the fundraiser please RT ow.ly/g0G8M

If every person we’ve assisted donated just $10 we would reach our goal within a few days. Your support will keep the legal help and educational outreach that we do going in 2013.

Also, if you would like to donate in a more traditional way without Paypal, you can donate here [ bit.ly/YcVZZX ]

SOME KIND PARTING WORDS

[ Laura Patrick, former NMR legal clerk, now attorney]

“As a clerk at New Media Rights, I saw what a beneficial resource New Media Rights is to the community. After only a few weeks,I knew I was going to walk away with much more than just experience. Art and Shaun opened my eyes to the possibility that legal work could be fun, creative, and personally enriching.

Helping artists, internet users and start-ups at NMR inspired me to bring what I had learned from the gang back to the East Coast. It is now my dream to provide this valuable service to creators and business owners in South Carolina.

I sincerely hope that I will be as successful in creating the intimate and positive work environment that exists at New Media Rights, as well as help as many people as they have over the years. Art and Shaun aren’t just great lawyers, they’re great mentors. I was extremely lucky to work with them at New Media Rights and I am very proud to have been a part of such an amazing and useful organization."

We’ve got good news and bad news…

BAD NEWS: Right now, a new season of our video series for indie game developers LAGD can’t happen if our Indiegogo fundraiser fails [ http://bit.ly/QYSC72 ] By the time you read this, we will have less than 20 days to raise over $10,000.

GOOD NEWS: LAGD has gotten 75,000+ views in the last three weeks since it’s been live. We’ve gotten such overwhelmingly positive support on Reddit for the that we made it to the #1 slot on r/Games. This adds to our accomplishment of helping with 400 legal issues for free in the last 12 months.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: We’re extremely thankful for all of the donations we’ve received thusfar and everyone who has volunteered to share the links through Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube … We need everyone to keep it up. If you shared the link before, please send it out again. Please also consider donating or raising your donation. If you’re not already our friends Twitter or Facebook or subscribed to us on Youtube, please connect with us.

CLARIFICATION: Donating to this fundraiser will support ALL of New Media Rights’ activities to defend free speech and an open internet. Our direct work with game developers and the LAGD video series that we describe on the fundraising page is just ONE example of our work with all sorts of independent creators and average internet users.

KIND WORDS:

[ Anita Sarkeesian, Feminist Frequency ]

I’m a pop culture critic who produces an ongoing web series of video commentaries exploring and deconstructing representations, myths and messages embedded in our media. You can find all of my work at FeministFrequency.com…

Art was incredibly helpful, supportive and understanding, if it wasn’t for his advocacy work I might still be caught in YouTube’s autoresponding feedback loop. New Media Rights is an amazing organization that offers quality one-to-one free legal assistance on copyright and online publishing, how-to and legal guides on new media and blogs about the latest media and internet laws.
