Help us share Caleb's story with the world 
and raise awareness about this important issue!

Meet Caleb Behn, a young Dene man from the wilds of northeastern British Columbia "where the mountains meet the plains" and the subject of an exciting documentary-transmedia project called Fractured Land.

An eloquent, inspiring First Nations law student, Caleb is on the front lines of some of the world's biggest hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") operations, amid exquisite boreal wilderness.

We - filmmakers Fiona Rayher and Damien Gillis - have been following Caleb for the past two years, helping tell his story of a land and worldview under attack. And now we're reaching out to our networks to raise funds to complete the film, while building a coalition to support the work of Caleb and others around Western Canada.

Our journey has taken us to places of largely unseen beauty - from Caleb's traditional territories, where he’s fished and hunted moose his whole life, to Maori lands in New Zealand, where he sought to learn how Indigenous law could be blended with the current legal system in order to protect our sacred ecosystems.

Now back in Canada, Caleb’s making a lot of noise - touring BC to speak about his experiences and concerns, and applying his legal education toward building bridges across divided communities. 

Alongside his Nation, Caleb is part of a new dialogue on sustainable, equitable energy development in Canada.

Fractured Land isn’t only the story of Caleb; it's also the story of our nation at a crossroads.

As Western Canada’s wealth of forests and rivers are bulldozed for fracking, oil and gas pipelines, massive new dams, mines and Liquefied Natural Gas destined for Asian markets, we have a choice: 

Do we continue zooming down this CARBON CORRIDOR... or do we CHANGE COURSE?

We’ve already captured some incredible footage - spectacular scenery, expert interviews, poignant intimate moments and more - and now we’re raising funds to finish the film.

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding (a.k.a. “crowdsourced fundraising”) is a new tool that democratizes how media is funded, produced and distributed by allowing media makers to fund their work using an online platform, like Indiegogo.com or Kickstarter.com, while also building an audience and a movement. 

In exchange, backers (a.k.a. those who donate) are rewarded with gifts and other incentives.

With two years under our belt and another year left of production, we're raising the funds to cover the costs of travel, equipment, filming and promotional materials.

Our goals with the Fractured Land crowdfunding campaign:

• To raise money to finish the film (including the purchase of an infrared camera to document invisible gases!);
• To raise awareness of a land and people under increasing threat;
• To raise the level of discourse around energy development beyond Us versus Them, Right versus Left, Jobs versus the Environment, Energy versus Our Future; and
• To raise a ruckus so loud our government and their successors are forced to work toward more sustainable energy solutions.

Ultimately, this campaign is meant to build on the existing solidarity movement and support the work native and non-native people are doing across Canada to bring justice to the land and protect people from poisoned water, soil and air.

Caleb is currently embroiled in a big fight up in Fort Nelson, helping the Fort Nelson First Nation to raise the profile of fracking in their territory, as big corps like Encana (in cahoots with government) push for long-term water licenses that will drain TENS OF BILLION OF LITRES OF FRESH WATER EVERY YEAR from their rivers, lakes and ground.

Some of the region's most important fish-bearing rivers are already being drained, others having dried up from climate change-induced drought conditions. The result: moose and fish populations are in decline.

Fractured Land co-director Damien Gillis appeared at GEN WHY MEDIA's recent Bring Your Boomers event for an inter-generational dialogue about Canada's emerging carbon corridor - a sophisticated web of hydrocarbon energy development spanning Western Canada.  

Produced by GEN WHY MEDIA in association with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the event features "living room conversations” with participants from different generations reflecting on BC’s industrial web of fracking, pipelines, LNG plants, tankers, mines, dams and the Tar Sands. Joining Damien (Y'er) were Ben Parfitt (X'er), Karen Cooling (Boomer) and 10-year-old performer and environmental crusader Ta'Kaiya Blaney (Z'er) in a conversation moderated by Marc Lee.
