My name is Martin John, creator, writer and letterer of Foreign Matter. Two years ago I decided to chase my dreams and start writing for real. A script that I wrote for an idea that my brother and I came up with thirteen years ago has shaped up in a way that I had never thought it would. I thought I would pitch it, aiming for an indie publisher, and decided to hire an artist in order to make that pitch a reality. I would have five pages of artwork based on my script. I went to digital webbing and out of all the applicants there was one wonderful artist named German Ponce that replied in a prompt and efficient manner. German did all the character designs for Foreign Matter in no time whatsoever, we had started our comic adventures together.
Through research into the industry and having my brain rattled by talking to professionals on message boards I was told that no one would want to buy my superhero comic book, as Marvel and DC comics were doing the genre and doing it better than I ever would. I was also told that my comic would never see print, would never get on a comic stand, and it would be better to find a way to present in online. Cue, http://www.foreignmattercomic.com, and me hiring German on a regular basis in order to finish the twelve issues of our comic.
We have found a publisher in What The Flux Comics. We have produced four full issues of comic and are into the beginning of the fifth. You can help fund our dream and make great comics with us. Or you can spread the word about our cause to others in order to help. We are the little indie that could, Foreign Matter.
Funding will allow me (Martin John) to climb out of the debt I have accrued and pay my art team an appropriate amount of money for their services for the first six issues. As the creator and writer of this project I take the financial responsibility for it.
What We Need & What You Get
In the end I will have spent over $25000 on this project, and that goes directly to German (an artist in Argentina) and Dave (an artist in the United States). This pays for their page rate. I am asking for one fifth of this in order to feel more comfortable in that fact that I will not go bankrupt while making the first half of this comic. Any money you pay towards Foreign Matter's Indie Go-Go goes to supporting artists. The money I have paid German so far has gone towards dental work, medical work, and rent as he attempts to get notice. Your dollars will be well spent.
Prizes include pdf copies, eternal gratitude, advance pdfs that no one has ever seen (you get the first look at issue three), copies of the comics, limited hardcover journals with autographs, limited prints of amazing pinup art from three different artists and limited to twenty-five copies each, and one lucky person gets to be eviscerated in the pages of our comic (yay).
Other Ways You Can Help
If this project sounds like something you'd like to support, please spread the word about it. Our first two issues are online and have been online for free for quite some time at http://www.foreignmattercomic.com The more people that read and know what we are doing and the quality of work and time invested in this project, the better chance that people will feel compelled to help us achieve our goals in creating a comic and realizing our dreams. Thank you so much for the chance to create.
