Next year, I will be flipping my classroom. Instead of utilizing a considerable amount of class time for lecture and having students complete homework outside of class, this will be reversed. Students will watch all materials that would normally be presented during a lecture in a traditional classroom at home, freeing up time to apply knowlege, complete more lab work, and get individualized help during school. To make this option viable for all students, my classroom needs to have permanent access to computers for students to use.
"Flipping" classes is a new idea in education. Some details and benefits of this concept are provided below:
This last school year I introduced the flipped classroom in the 4th quarter across some of my classes. I received a tremendous amount of feedback from the content. Examples of materials I have produced so far are provided on my YouTube channel:
Students completed surveys regarding my flipped classroom introduction last year, and the feedback was very positive. One of the questions on the survey asked students if they had access to a computer and the internet at home. While approximately 95 percent of students stated they would be able to access this material at home, about 5 percent stated they would not - one of the primary concerns from the illustration above and the reason I am seeking funding for this project.
Two refurbished 16 gigabyte iPad minis for my classroom would provide a permanent tool in the classroom for students without computer or internet access at home to access flipped classroom materials. Since around 5 percent of my students will not have access to technology at home, additional iPads would be ideal. Since I will have around 150 students next year - up to 30 students per class - even 8 iPads would be utilized regularly, as more students could benefit from the tool simultaneously.
I am seeking funding for iPad minis, as opposed to alternative devices, for a few reasons:
I have invested in excess of $100 on various iOS apps with educational applications that would allow students to access, produce, and edit relevant content - examples would include Explain Everything, Keynote, iMovie, Numbers, Pages, and Notability.
I have my classroom outfitted with an AppleTV, allowing students to share their work via projector with the rest of the class. Only Apple products would be compatible with all of the resources that I currently have available.
Refurbished iPad minis through Apple cost approximately $279.00, making it the most cost-effective tool for the job. Rugged cases costing approximately $20.00 would round out the $300.00 estimate for cost to protect this classroom investment.
I am very familiar with iOS and my own iPad.
There has been a tremendous movement over the last few years involving the use of iPads both in the classroom and in the professional world. Countless school systems have equipped teachers or even the entire student body with iPads with astounding results, and numerous research studies have shown the benefit of incorporating iPads for student learning in educational settings. Websites emphasizing these details are found below.
