Why Edible Gardens?

Because edible gardens encourage healthier eating habits. Only 2% of American children eat enough fruits and vegetables, and 1 in 3 American children born after 2000 is at risk for Type II diabetes. A garden is an introduction to the real, healthy food students and families need access to.

Because involvement in edible garden programs can help fix America's "Nature Deficit." With more than 80% of Americans living in cities and suburbs, we need to work harder than ever to provide children with outdoor experiences.

Because gardens are a living laboratory for education. Not just a source of healthy food — but also a lesson on what growing healthy food requires. Not just exposure to nature — but also a way for children to literally harvest the fruits of their own labor.

A True "Seed" Investment

For as little as $10, you can help our community reap all the benefits a garden has to offer. In just 39 days, we plan to raise $2500 per garden; to feed,  teach, and inspire people in each of these 100 communities.

Here are a few things our garden plans to do with your donations:

  • Rewiring our Shed -

We've got a solar panel operating, but the wiring in our shed is so old that we need to totally rewire it!  Then we'll be able to do cooking demonstrations, work on crafts on rainy days, and even share teaching and growing tips on YouTube!

  • Converting an old "Seed House" to an "Education Cottage" -

Our site was once a private nursery and home, with a small glass-enclosed green house.  After we renovate this structure, we will have another area where student groups can learn and practice "Green Thumb" skills.

  • Providing Guidance for Local School Gardens -

By increasing our full-time staff, we can provide professional development to allow teachers to plan and implement Edible Garden projects on their own school grounds.
