[UPDATE 1 - JULY 13]
WOW! We've made our $3000 goal in only 3 and a half days! Thank you all so much for your support! This has been an UNBELIEVABLE week!
But we can't stop here! Let's keep this campaign going! We have two weeks left and can use every dollar we get. Our next checkpoint is $5000, which gives us the means to rent a better camera and $1000 to spend on food to be donated, so let's aim high and nail it! Thank you all!!
Greetings! My name is Dave Conte, editor and filmmaker from New York City. I've been making my own movies for years and am looking for your help in bringing my next short film to life.
What if there was a man who built the mother of all bomb shelters? A place that was not only completely safe, but equipped with well water, a toilet, a small amount of electricity, enough food to keep him fed, and enough things to keep him from going insane for a very long time. What's HIS story?
[escape] started as a comment on horror film tropes, and the intrinsically unsafe nature of practically any "safe" location you find in them. But the more I thought about it and the more I developed it, the more I started to find pieces of myself in this man's story, and it's become a story I want to tell.
So what is [escape]? It's a short conceptual narrative built around this idea of a man who has prepared for the worst, and now has to deal with it. It's a character study that explores the psyche of a man who finds himself inside of his perfectly safe shelter after surviving a catastrophe, and the journey he goes through as he begins to remember what brought him there in the first place.
The script is written, the location is secure, we're mostly crewed up, and now we need your help to continue. The money we're asking for will ensure a quality product. No expense is being spared, no corners are being cut, and no dollar will go to waste. And not only will your contribution help us make a great film, it will also help us put food in the hands of 1.5 million New Yorkers in need thanks to the support of Food Bank for New York City.
We're looking for $3000. That's the minimum amount of money we need to make this film right, and most of that is going to go toward set dressing.
We need to fill this bomb shelter with everything our main character needs to stay alive, stay healthy, and stay sane. Chief among those are stacks of non-perishable foods. But I didn't want to fake it. I don't want to just write "food" on a box and film it, and I think more than ever, audiences appreciate it when films go the extra mile and do things as practically as possible.
At least, I do. So I've decided to fill the shelter with actual non-perishable food, and donate all of it when the film is done. 20% of every donation will go toward the purchase of non-perishable foods that will be donated to Food Bank for New York City. For every $5 you pledge, $1 will go towards food to be donated. I've been in touch with the Food Bank for New York City, and they are fully on-board with this initiative.
The rest of the $3000 will go toward:
- Location Costs
- Set Building
- Equipment Rentals
- Props and Wardrobe
It may be uncouth in the crowdsourcing world, but I will not be offering too many perks for pledging. I'm keeping the perks minimal because I feel that our charitable purpose is more important than any trinket I could possibly offer, and I don't want to shift my focus to anything other than making this film great.
Here's what I'm offering:
Any donation above $5 will give you a digital copy of the film, via a streaming link and a separate download link.
Any donation above $50 will give you the above plus the option for a fully-authored Blu-Ray or DVD of the film.
Any donation above $500 will give you the above and an Executive Producer credit.
