What is The Weird Girls Project?
The Weird Girls Project is an ongoing art piece created and produced by concept artist Kitty Von-Sometime in Iceland. It evolves Episode by Episode and the participants mix between those involved from the beginning and new members increasing with every event. Each Episode is planned by Kitty for approximately three months with the participants knowing as little as is possible about the event excluding the date, this includes the concept, location and costumes. As standard there will be a photo shoot and they are aware they will be filmed. The main element of the project is reaction to the unknown.
Media is produced from each Episode but the project also focuses on the event itself and how the women react, improvise and morph within costume coming together as a group. The women are varying in ages, backgrounds and experience, and do not necessarily know each other before the day. The Project involves ordinary women rather than professional actresses or models and part of the inspiration was to encourage a gain in self confidence within young women, especially focusing around body issues.
So far over 3 years the project has birthed 11 Episodes and 1
special. It started in a very naive style with the media showing
little to no experience and it has matured throughout the life of the
project. Kitty creates the concept for each event and in addition has
directed, designed and edited on varying Episodes but always draws in
the talents of different photographers, costume makers and film makers
to bring the concept to life.
This fundraiser is specifically to produce Episode 12.

The ImpactThe project has been self funded up until this point (with the exception of some equipment costs being fronted by a few bands using the video pieces as promos). With the recession, especially in Iceland, art grants have been slashed, living costs have spiraled and the amount of money required for materials and resources means the project has reached a standstill.
Many women have been waiting for months (some for years) for the project to have budget to include them to challenge their boundaries and boost their self confidence. The aim is for this piece to have 25-35 women in the cast.
In addition to supporting the project and Icelandic arts, the location for the piece has been hit by the drop in tourism sparked by the fear of volcanic ash and the cast, crew and documentary crew following the group means 45-50 people will be staying in local accommodation - supporting small businesses in a financially difficult time.
What We Need & What You Get
The budget for the piece:
Travel to and from the location: 200,000isk / $1750
Accommodation: 150,000isk / $1300
Costumes: 210,000isk / $1850
Food: 80,000isk / $700
Equipment: 150,000isk / $1300
As you can see the budget above does not include any salaries and is more than the $6000 I am pitching for. We are hoping to self fund the rest with other local fund-raising if necessary.
If we do not get the full funding, we will still go ahead with the piece but will have to drop the number of women taking part.
By pledging you can get some great gifts including artwork, original Weird Girls props and costumes, opportunities to join us and much more. See our VIP perks.
